Box of free plants- to someone in NW IL area to pick up

This offer may be extended to more than one GW member. I have some nice perennials that could be divided. The catch is... well... you have to come pick them up! And.... I'd like you to tell me why I should pick you to receive them ;-)

No sob stories please - gardening is a happy place!

I am in zip code 61014. carroll county. You can google to see if that is near you!

My story is the story of many newbie gardeners...2 years I got the bug....then I became an addict and collected every seed you could imagine. I ended up with 3 large boxes of seed-over 700 different kinds (triple that if you are counting the separate packs-LOL)and last winter and this spring I planted many many of them...a pinch here-a dab there. I earned a well deserved name of "the seed queen".

What I ended up with is several boxes of seeds and a bed full of annuals that will need to replaced in the spring again-LOLOL They are pretty-and some very interesting ones, but still annuals in my zone 4. So, if you are looking for a home...let me know. I have many beds that will be empty by the end of the month. And by the way....know anyone that would like some seeds-LOLOLOL

I too would be happy to pay postage if no one in your area comes forward.

My story is that at my previous home, over the years that I lived there,I purchased, traded, was given and gave away many, many plants and seeds. Much of these were from rare plants and most of my plants where not seen in your typical garden.

Since moving out to the country, I am kicking myself for not taking cuttings, bulbs or seeds from my favorite plants. I had the most wonderful varieties of species tulips, the smaller extremely fragrant daffodils (earlicheer and more). Azalea Hilda Niblets which were my all time favorites among many other varieties of azaleas. I had Dog's Tooth Violet, perennial geraniums, rare tulips and a unique variety of the large cupped daffodils. Many, many varieties of fragrant hosta's, Daphne Burkwoodi (sp), Princes Diana Rosebush, an extremely fragrant honeysuckle for which I do not know the name of, ornamental lilies, a beautiful ornamental weeping tree, and too many more plants and shrubs to list.

We are here in the beautiful country with no plants at all. It is apparent that the person who owned this home prior to us did not like to garden. Our home would be much improved if we could add some splashes of color around it. It sure would brighten my days for sure!

Gary, One thing to keep in mind with orchids at the big boxes is many are, for the money, a better deal than buying cut flowers because they last so much longer. I do that, knowing that I know very little about keeping it alive or getting it to rebloom after it finally peters out. I just stick them in the boot of the palm tree out back and once in a blue moon fertilize them. And several have died out there, but one rebloomed for me recently. I felt like I doubled my money on that little very common purple and white dendrobium. I do the same thing with the little broms with the spectacular flowers (or whatever brom's non-flower flowers are called.) After several weeks, the flowers die and I plant them in the ground. I've had several of those rebloom too, and I'm even bringing pups and big divisions to the swap. They're not fancy, but for the $8 I paid, I got a lovely flower in the kitchen window for weeks, and if I get more, wow, yippee! I also think the orchids make much nicer hostess gifts than showing up with a bunch of cut flowers. If the hostess can't keep it alive to rebloom, he or she will at least get to enjoy the nice spray of flowers for much longer than cut flowers will last. (so when you see me at HD, don't bother to counsel me on my brom and orchid buys... just all the other stuff I might buy and potentially kill or hate!) As for the in-store kills, I saw a massacre in the making yesterday. Someone should go to the K-Mart in Miami Shores and convince the manager to sell them all the broms and orchids for cheap. They lost the shade covering in Fay and everything there is burned looking and won't last much longer. I thought about talking to him or her, but I don't know enough about orchids to think that even if they were heavily discounted, I could keep enough of them alive and get them to rebloom to make it worth it. susannah

Cheapest Mulch in Wheaton, IL area?

I live in Palatine. The mulch is free, but remember "you get what you pay for"... The best time to go is a week or two after a big storm - all the fallen limbs & broken branches around town end up here, so the wood is 'fresh' & somewhat healthy. But you'll also get alot of leaves still green mixed in. Sometimes mid-summer the quality isn't too good - I've found lots of garbage ground up with the plant material (plastic grocery store bags, broken glass, empty cigarette packs...). Sometimes residents bundle up very diseased & bug infested material to be recycled, and the village employees can't be expected to inspect everything they grind, so you're just giving these problems a free ride into your yard. Because I live close, it's easy to stop by to check the quality, and come back later if if looks spooky. I've also taken a few bags of good mulch from a very massive huge pile, & gone back 2 days later to find it's all gone. But if you do go, bring containers (I use plastic 'contractor clean-up bags') & shovel & gloves. You're digging it yourself from a pile. And the mice are friendly...

Motel in Hohenwald is Embassy Inn..931-796-1500...better call ahead they stay pretty busy. On the main drag as you come into town on the right just before the 1st redlight (for those of you coming from the north and east) Go through the 4th traffic light and it is on the left (for those of you coming from the west) Food...make sure that you can keep it cold/hot until lunch...I have a couple of plugs on the porch of the bathhouse were we can plug in slow cookers, etc. First come, first serve. There will be snacks, soft drinks, bottled water, Gatorade and ice in the camp store. Cheaper than a convienent store. In the past we have NOT had enough drinks for the potluck lunch...some of you coming from long distances, this is something you could bring. FOODS...I suggest salads--fruit and veggie, veggie trays, sandwiches, finger foods, sliced ham, and anything just plain easy to fix or that you are good at making...we aren't fancy...just plain folks who like to eat. We do have several diabetics so some of you keep them in mind when you plan your food. The paper products (plates, cups, silverware, etc) will be furnished... we are asking those of you that can to donate $1 to help pay for these. It takes time to pack boxes of plants. More time than I have to donate to you.
Besides I don't enjoy packing boxes. It is fun tho to hand plants to people who can smile and be excited about it.

You will have to be here and take them with.
Still waiting to hear from a local person...

Hi Karen,

If you don't find any local takers from your post here, try posting it on the Craig's list for your area. I had a local plant sale once that I advertised on Craig's list and couldn't believe how many people that free ad generated.

Darn it you are about 100 miles from me.... doubt I can convince hubby that I should drive 100 miles for some plants. :)

There are some people from IL here so maybe someone will post.

Craigslist is a great idea too... might want to put a price not for free....

I just listed on the closest Craig's list and altho the list city is 70 mi. away
who knows. Yes, I did list a price there.
