Have you checked your soil temperature? It is probably just too cool yet for germination and once the soil warms a bit they will sprout. Same with the carrots.

The odds of none of the pack sprouting are pretty slim. If you check soil temps at germination levels before planting you save yourself many headaches.

I've always read that peas are cool weather plants and to start them outside as soon as the soil can be worked... Must get soil thermometer!

Dig up some peas and inspect them. If they are rotted, it was too cold and moist. Bad seed will also rot but that is relatively unlikely. If they are growing a taproot downwards, they are likely just growing very slowly. Peas don't really like cold weather, they tolerate it, but grow very slowly. If you find roots eaten away, you have something down there nibbling the roots. Inspect the peas for pest damage. Split the peas in half and check the inside. Where I live the culprit is lots of tiny millipedes.

Yup, IMO, peas like cool weather to grow in, but warm soil definitely helps them to germinate. The more wrinkled a pea seed, (the less starch in it), the harder it is to get to grow in less than perfect conditions, much like sweet corn. I tried those new "supersweet" peas (I think it's called Eclipse) a couple of years back, and found them very hard to germinate compared to old standards planted under the very same conditions.

And, a lot of other things can befall peas, not just the weather. Voles and mice like them, as do chipmunks and squirrels. Last year, all of my first planting of pea seeds disappeared within a couple of days, but I did get a bumper crop of vole tunnels sprout up in the same rows!

soak peas for several days between two wet paper towels in a warm spot. planting in seed trays inside works really well as they transplant very easily and you can give them optimum conditions for germination and early growth

lon peas only need to be soaked only 8 hours any more and you risk them rotting.

I planted mine on March 20th. There are just starting to come up.

I planted some peas in November to attempt a winter crop. Waited 4 weeks which was twice the time it had ever taken them to come up before. I did what tcstoehr had suggested and dug up a couple to find they had sprouted, they were just taking their sweet time. I'm just harvesting those peas now. (In the meantime, the ones I planted on 3/1 are nearly as big and starting to flower. I won't be bothering with November peas again.)

I am in northern Indiana, so I have a very similar climate. I planted some peas in containers on March 17. They are about an inch tall right now. I planted more in my in-ground garden April 4. Those have no sign of life yet, but I have lots of holes in the area where it appears critters have gotten to them. Funny, they look like they went after the super snappy variety, but left the little marvel, alaska, and green arrow alone. Don't give up yet!

I'm near Reading, PA. I planted mine March 6th, and they just started coming up. They are about an inch and a half tall. They have never been so slow before. I did see a mockingbird nipping away at the soil a few weeks ago. I just assumed he ate them all over that time. I was wrong. They're coming up...finally.

I think this long given advice about "planting as soon as soil can be worked" is wrong, wrong, wrong. I have been gardening for 70 years and I always had problems with peas until I began waiting for the soil to warm up to about 50 degrees before Spring planting. Then I had far fewer problems and a lot more peas. I am sure I will find those who disagree. I have a young friend who still shovels snow off of his pea bed to plant according to the "correct" moon phase. Try waiting for the soil to warm up a bit and a lot of growing problems go away.

I think you're right, sconticut. I personally don't plan to try growing peas again between 9/15 and 2/15 here in CA. I know of people who do and claim good yields, but for me, it simply hasn't been worth it.

Nope, not the culprits.
Instead, millipedes are the cleanup crew; they get rid of the dead & dying pea seeds.

I was wondering if the millipede deniers would show up.
Alot of people think millipede are harmless to growing plants, and it most cases that's true. But in some cases millipedes are a terror. They particularly love to destroy plantings of peas, beans and corn.
I dug up dozens of peas each one crawling with small millipedes. They had their bodies half-way burrowed into the pea. The peas themselves were live and not rotted at all, just being consumed by the ravenous millipedes. The tap root almost always completely consumed. Without any doubt, millipedes were completely destroying otherwise healthy germinating peas. Last year too.
An an experiment I planted some test peas in various other beds. In the new beds the peas grew without incident. In the beds that have been composted for a couple years now, millipede damage was complete. They love compost and moist soil, it's an ideal environment. And in sufficient numbers they can destroy germinating seeds, peas in particular.

I had been warned that Symphylan populations might build up and wreck my vegetable garden, and for a while I thought that might be happening. However, I only occasionally see a Symphylan or two. The millipedes were off my radar. I now suspect millipedes were behind problems I've had direct-seeding various crops. Something has been chewing their roots and stubbing them off, stunting the plants badly or killing them in the seedling stage. I'll now have to do some reevaluation.
Millipedes are apparently very hard to kill, poisoned baits seem to be the best way. I'm not resorting to that yet, but I am also considering selectively dropping the use of compost and relying entirely on organic fertilizers such as seedmeals and mineral powders. I understand the benefits of compost but my peas will no doubt grow better without millipedes.
Oddly enough, I did get a stand of peas going. I pushed the infested peas aside and replanted. The millipedes were happy to keep munching on the old peas while the new ones got a start. Some of the new ones were having trouble but not too many. Those that I pulled up while thinning did have millipedes on them, but only a couple. It seems the peas are able to deal with two or three but not 20.

I planted 'Caruther's Purple Pod' peas in the middle of March in large containers. I even soaked and pre-sprouted them before planting outside. It has taken them more than three weeks to break the soil, and now I finally have 1" pea seedlings growing. I have never had a year when peas germinated so reluctantly. Must be the erratic weather we have been having?

I'm outside of Denver. I heat my soil then plant. Peas are a little odd in that they need warm soil temps but cool air temps. Here is one of our local garden writers discussing it.

Wow! Thanks for all the advice. I am just now seeing the first of the peas sprouts! I did not have a chance yet to dig any up to see what was going on, but I may not have to now. I guess it is just the erratic weather... Though previous springs also were erratic and I don't remember peas having issues... Radishes and beets are up, too. Still no carrots. I don't have high hopes for them, they usually disappoint me...
Oh, regarding the millipedes: Last year I tried growing soy beans for the first time. My first planting was eaten by slugs before they could germinate! Second try I took some precautions and they made it! I put out beer bait traps initially,then a ring of cornmeal around each plant (once they were up) and kept replacing after a rain. I rather doubt the same would work against millipedes...

I've had trouble with peas this year too. I finally had a year with good weather on St Patrick's Day which I've heard many times is a good time to sow pea seeds. I planted on that day and soaked the seeds for about a day before planting. I was so pleased with myself for getting them in early. Then the weather turned cold again, snow again. No germination. Dug some up the other day and they were not sprouting, so I finally replanted new seed yesterday. Now I'm a month behind and I'm afraid the temperatures are going to be too warm for peas soon. *sigh*

It blows my mind how many internet sites will show 45 degrees as the *optimal* temperature for pea germination. What a crock. Just goes to show that just cuz everyone says it's so doesn't mean it's so. Just one of those things that people hear and repeat without checking.

FWIW, I've been soaking my pea seeds in a solution of water and vitamin C overnight before planting. It does seem to speed up germination.
