what will grow between pavers???

I am about to lay largish format pavers(23x15in)on a bed of sand and would like to leave a gap between them of about an inch or so in an effort to make the terrace look rustic. What i would then like to do is plant something between them, grass or some kind of plant.Under normal conditions i'm told sand is broomed into this space but i'm not sure much of interest will grow in sand. The paver thickness is only an inch(pedestrian traffic only)so even if i put soil into this gap(which i am reluctant to do for fear of dirtying the pavers)i'm still not sure what will grow here. This job is on the island of Corsica in the mediterranean sea, hot and dry in the summer, cool and wet the winter. I've no clue what to do here so any idea's will be greatfully received. Rick

You will have to put soil between the pavers for anything to survive and the one plant I am thinking of is thyme which will take foot traffic.

Depending on your zone, I've seen pictures online of varieties of Ajuga reptens growing between pavers.

Another option may be to try Mazus reptans or creeping Maze. It is a very pretty blue flowering fast growing groundcover. Although it doesn't do well in my area of Northern New York it grows quite well in zones 6 to 8. If your area of Houston can tolerate zone 8 plants you may want to try it.

What do you use to stop growth of grass/weeds between brick pavers?

Once you get rid of the weeds, hose down the pavers with as strong a stream of water as you can. Make sure to get as much stuff from out between the pavers as possible, moss, weeds, gunk, goop, dirt. Next, get polymeric sand. Here is an example of one from THD. There are other brands out there. Follow the directions on the bag, box, container. Essentially, you pour it out, sweep it in (getting as much into the joints as possible) and then once the joints are full. Spray it with water. The water reacts with the polymeric sand to great what is basically grout, but it is permeable to water. This will help prevent weeds from growing for a long time, plus it weill make your pavers/patio look better. Good luck, Dan

Creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum - many different forms) is a classic paver groundcover under these conditions, is tolerant of considerable foot traffic and is native to your area. And it prefers very well-draining and rather lean soil, so requires no additional soil other than what is surrounding the roots of any starts you may purchase - it will grow perfectly well in sand.

JTMONEY.....WOW That choc.chip, ajuga is beautiful, I have never seen it before. How hardy is it? I am in maine zone 4/5 .
