Need Ideas for Flowering ground cover on this area

I have a large hilly area that I want to add some color to. I have been fighting weeds on this hill for three years, it's quite shady, right now I have daylilies, bleeding hearts, butterfly bushes and some species of flowering mint. Any ideas on how I can control weeds on this space? Is Preen a good option?

Also what can I plant that would be low to the ground and flower in the summer? Something that would spread out would be fine, I want easy maintenance.

When I was in central California a couple weeks ago, I found a beautiful ground cover called Ice Plant. It grows on most of the hills on the side of the freeways and spreads readily. It looks like it grows in all conditions also. I plan to order some and use it on a hill in my backyard that is similar to yours.

hm... My are would be easy to contain, I believe. Its bordered by roads on 3 sides and the part of my yard I mow on the 4th side. There are no trees except a few big pines on one side of my lot. Is English Ivy the fastest growing/spreading ground cover? And would it kill other ground cover/small trees I have planted. I've got to do something, this lot is nothing but a weed/grass field now...Ugly

Around deck ground cover, long but shallow area needs filling

We're digging up some rocks around our deck and berming it up to keep the under-deck area from flooding all the time. It's such a pain, all the water goes under the deck as it's leaving the slope of the hill we live on and fills up our window well. When it flash floods, the drain can't empty fast enough and if we don't run a portable sump pump, it cascades through the window and into our finished basement. The other window well was filled in with concrete. I'm looking at berming with a good ground cover to hold it in place rather than doing concrete in this one. The windows are non-functional as there is a huge deck over them. Anyway, onto the ground cover issue! I was considering Deutzia Nikko (short bloom time is a detractor) or a taller Nepeta Walker's Low (cats are a big detractor). I feel that after the area is bermed, it will drain well but still I worry about a water logged plant. The rest of the time, the plant will probably have mostly dry conditions, partial sun (afternoon sun). The linear feet around the deck is like 40 feet of space to fill, but it's only 12-18" from the driveway to the lattice at the bottom of the deck. Will Nikko make it on such a small amount of space? It seems like it would be the better of the two at keeping the dirt in place.

That is horseherb! I love it in my hot and shady areas. It survives with little water and thrives when it gets some! I love Leadwort, aka hardy plumbago for shady areas. It's not terribly invasive and the cobalt blue flowers all summer and purple-reddish foliage in cool weather are a bright spot of color!

It sounds like you're looking for more of a foundation planting than a ground cover. I would suggest some sand tolerant grasses. You could probably find some local 'volunteers' for free plants. How elevated are we talking? Stilts with parking underneath or a 4-6 ft block foundation?

Your bleeding hearts are lovely. My mother has a similar slope and her ground cover is lamium. Hers has white blooms, I believe it is available in other colors as well. It thrives in shade, even dry shade on her slope, and yet it doesn't muscle or crowd out other plants.

You could also add hostas. They aren't technically a ground cover, but they do cover a lot of ground once they are mature, and they will probably love the site since your bleeding hearts and ferns look happy there.

Mulch.

pachysandra, lily-of-the-valley, creeping jenny--lots of options :-)

Google "shade groundcover", and you'll find tons of others.

All three of the above can get pretty aggressive, hence the recommendation, but they're not insane.
