Is this container big enough for sugar baby watermelons?
Comments (8)If you have a soil thermometer, you can check the temp of the soil in the "pot". But when I lived in Las Vegas, NV, I did an experiment. I had a lot of stuff growing in 2-gal black plastic pots. They were getting heat stressed. I put my compost thermometer in the soil, and the temp was up to 130F. So I wrapped some plain old kitchen aluminum foil around the same black pots, and took their temp at the same time the next day, and the soil temp had dropped to 90F. Since your container is fairly shiny, you may not have a problem with heat. But if you are using straight potting soil, you'll want to check to see if it dries out too fast. If it dries out fast early on, you might want to add some of those water-retaining crystals to the soil. Sue...See MoreSugar Baby Watermelon question
Comments (4)I've got 1 Sugar baby on the vine. It will reach full size but won't be ready to pick until ripe, which time varies quite a bit for different varieties. Sugar baby is one of the quickest to ripen. I believe the DTM is 75 days. The 75 days almost works for me because they mature faster in containers. If I was growing in the ground would add 10 days to 2 weeks. With only one melon it's a bit of a crap shoot when to pick....See More? on Sugar Baby Watermelons - greenhouse grown
Comments (5)Also, I would look for BOTH, dried tendrils and yellowing. Thumping isn't really an accurate way of doing this, as you will have a different way of thumping. The mistake I made was that I picked the watermelon when it had dried tendrils but was green all around (no yellowing). As I cut the watermelon open, I saw that only the center was red, and there was some green whereas the rest was all white. Yellowing gives you a sense of age. I'm still experimenting as this is my first time growing sugar babies. I just brought in a melon today that had some yellowing and dried tendrils and it was great!I have two more watermelons outside where the tendrils are drying but no yellowing atm. They've been on the vine for quite a while so I'm really curious to see how they come out. Again, this will only make me more knowledgeable for the next growing season (hopefully I won't forget these lessons, lol)...See MoreSugar Baby Watermelon
Comments (7)Thanks Digdirt and Farmerdill. I'm pretty sure its a regular Sugar Baby. Ive grown melons before and this is the first time for Sugar Baby. I have watched the tendril and it is brown, I need to check the bottom tho. I put the date when I seen the tendril brown and well, its been 9 days since. So today I will cut it and see what I have. I will try to post a picture. Also I failed to write down if it was a transplant or direct sown, I did both and well, I probably couldn't tell which plant it came from since the patch if full of vines. Our weather has been hot hot hot so perhaps the DTM could have no bearing. I understand its just a guess on the seed sellers part. Thanks for pointing that out. Ok, will be back later to let you know how it is....See Morejustaguy2
