Saskatoons (frequently called June berries here) grow wild in the lower elevations of the mountains in my area up to around 7,000 feet. When found wild, they are growing near streams where the soil stays moist without being too wet. I have one that turned up growing with a flowering almond I bought some years ago, along with a dogwood, and the almond died. They are an attractive bush, turning bright orange/red in fall and masses of white flowers in May. I have it planted in an area that is very gravelly and it dries out too quick, so has stayed very small, but it produces berries every year. The berries closest to the branch tend to ripen first, then the ripening moves further out to the end of the fruit mass. Very good, and as Chills mentioned, kind of blueberry like with a hint of almond, which makes them better than blueberries in my book since I only tolerate blueberries. You'll have to fight the birds for them, though.

Thanks shillanorth Ostrich, if it was closer I would come and get them. First time my girls got them and lets just say they didn't eat dinner. CLB lol! If they were not abundant here I seriously would. My girls loved them. I think my PAD is in remission. Two days in a row in the greenhouses and I bought nothing. Yeahp, I am sweating and my mouth is dry. Almost left with a peonie. Dang Ginny! Poppies are blooming about a handful a day. I will have extra seed this year if anyone desires. North, that pic of her was after she figured out that picking the berries and eating them was a lot of work. Was easier to rake the branch with your teeth. The odd 'undesirable' was worth the lack of effort. Too bad I needed both hands to hold the branches at her level without breaking them. Video would have been great. I couldn't resist posting because we all garden for the joy it both brings to us and others. Her tired, fruit sugar filled happiness was overwhelming. Both are native to Wyoming, the second also occurs in BC. So they grow wild close to Alberta, just not in it apparently. Neither has the horticultural importance of A. alnifolia var. alnifolia, with its comparatively large fruits. Species of Amelanchier are used in horticulture, and cultivars of A. alnifolia, A. canadensis, A. laevis, and A. lamarckii Schroeder are especially popular. Amelanchier lamarckii was named from plants grown in European gardens from plants originally from eastern North America (F.-G. Schroeder 1968). It appears that plants resembling A. lamarckii have escaped from cultivation in North America. Cultivars of A. alnifolia are grown as fruit crops.
