I do sprouts sometimes as well, generally in the 'off season' for outdoor growing. I get my sprouts from the Sprout People. For me they are nearly local (45 minute drive), but they have a good web/mail order business as well.

I confess I am not a huge sprout fan, but I still make a batch every once in a while for the heck of it. A little salad dressing and they are pretty good. Certainly very healthy.

I'm a great fan of sprouts. Most recently did a batch of wheat (I get the wheat berries from the health food store) and have a 3 tier sprouter so can do several kinds at a time. The wheat stores well in the fridge after the sprouts are 1/2 inch long. Great to add texture to salads or as a salad by themselves like tabouli. Broccoli sprouts are supposedly even healthier than the heads themselves. I just gave my son (living in the city on the 30th floor) a sprouter for his new apartment. It will be the only gardening he can do, he was thrilled.

I like mung beans sprouts the best, but lentils are really good, too. I agree that growing sprouts is a great way to wait out the last days of winter. You can also grow cress under lights and have little green things to chop into dishes and brighten them up.

How funny that this is the first posting that I am responding to. I have been lurking around for a couple few months now, just soaking in the information.

I am a first year veggie gardener in Tempe (Phoenix) Arizona and am doing a raised bed. I have a friend living with me while she goes through Chemo (bald as the day is long I might add) She brought a sprouter so I was looking up how to do it. WOW! Broccoli sprouts supposedly can arrest and or reverse breast cancer... lots of studies.

Got mine from Amazon and they are very prolific!

Obviously we are not depending on that, or she wouldn't be bald... but it's fun - quick - very satisfying for a quick 'planting fix' and they actually taste really good!

Interestingly enough... I eat more of them than she does...

Hey everyone, thanks for the responses! We really enjoyed the first sprouts, even shared them with the sons friend - even 17 year old boys eat sprouts!

The good news is that the spinach is up now so the ground is warming enough to really make me anxious to get out in the dirt!

I see the chives are starting to green so can add those to the mix. We are anxiously awaiting the first asparagus too. It is early yet, but I keep looking.

If you want to grow broccoli, you might want to try the NutriBud variety from Seeds of Change or Nichols Garden Nursery. It has a high free glutamine content, which is supposed to be an important nutriceutical with activity against cancer cells.

But growing anything will bring plenty of benefits to you and your friend. Fragrant herbs are especially good at reminding you that life is good.

Anyway - the anti-cancer "ingredients" in the broccoli sprouts are actually glucoraphanin and sulforaphane... and one could potentially eat just 1-2 ounces of the sprouts per day as opposed to 20-50 times the amount of actual broccoli.

I know way too much about this for my own good.

There are also other health benefits of broccoli sprouts in that they may cut the risk of stroke, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.

I am all for them either way and think that if there is even a 10% decrease in any of the above, they should be sprouted at home and eaten daily.

Besides, like I said, they are a great 'Growers Fix"!

Huge sprout fan here! It's the only veggie I put on sandwiches, and boy do we pile them thick! Grow a new crop every week! at $2.39 or so for 1/5th of what I grow for pennies, I'll keep on!
