Globe Artichokes in Containers

Hell all,

In another post I talked about some Globe Artichokes I tried to grow in my garden. Those look as though they didn't survive and I ordered four new plants from Hirts today.

I'm thinking about trying two of them out in pots and purchased some 18 x 18 x 18 inch planter from Lowes.

I did a search on the internet to try and determine if Globe Artichokes can be grown in a container and according to some people they have had great success in large containers but they never specified the size of their containers.

Can someone help me out with this? Would my container be adequate /large enough?

The container is large enough, but your weather is awfully hot for artichokes. They like cooler weather and mild winters. Most of the commercial crops grow in central coastal California.

Mulch heavily and see if that helps.

Thanks for the input belgianpup. I had one year olds growing last year here while we in a drought and they grew huge but I didn't care for them as I should during the winter so I'm pretty sure they are dead. Live and learn I guess.

I'm going to give them one more shot this year. It's suppose to be a cooler summer this year and I'm starting off with two year plants this time.

I think I'll plant two where I had them last year and two in containers and see how it goes.

There is always a chance.... ;-) But with your description...not a good chance. Go purchase a couple of 2 year old plants (local nursery/around 4.00 each), and you will get at least a couple of Artichokes from them this year, then I would cut them down after Harvest (4" stubs sticking out of the ground), and then let them grow back during the fall (slight chance of a small harvest), and cover them with a tent of Remay (perhaps doubled), and check on them periodically to see if they need another layer of protection from freezing during the winter. You can do this ...it just takes more diligence on your part,if you get a lot of freezing weather.

globe artichokes in raised beds?

Growing them in raised beds is not a problem. They are perennial but not in zone 5. Planting in the spring as would be required in your zone, your chances of harvesting a crop before frost is not very good. In the US artichokes are grown along the California coast commercially, where there is little chance of a heavy frost. After harvest is over the plants are cut to the ground to regrow from the roots for next years harvest. Al
