Lava rock in gritty mix

I'm interested to know where lava pebbles rank as an ingredient for a gritty mix variant. Right now I use turface and grit, in equal parts, but wonder if lava rock pebbles can be mixed in, mainly for athstetic reasons. I have liked the look of it since seeing Josh's (greenman) mixes. Also, lava pebbles are lighter in weight compared to both turface and grit, which would be great for bigger pots.

With that said, is it feasible to use lava rock, and what kind of moisture retention does it have compared to turface and grit?

Also, at what ratio would it work best in conjunction with turface and grit, to maintain similar moisture levels?

I think lava rock holds about 50% of what turface does. Pores are much bigger. Grit holds zero, well surface tension holds some.

I would feel good using up to 50% lava rock as part of my granite fines. Al

I have plants in gritty growing in a "pot in a pot" in my house. You are spot on about hearing the water trickle out while watering. My pots are ceramic and plastic. The plastic pot fits tightly leaving a reservoir at the bottom. The roots evetually grow down into that moist void space. Now about the water in the bottom. If the pots are glazed ceramic, the water won't evaporate very fast. Any raw ceramic, like on the very bottom, will help evaporate out the water. It will also destroy a hardwood floor because of the moisture, so lift it off the ground if the bottom is not glazed. You are going to need to figure out a way to remove the water in the bottom of the pot. With my small ones, I just take them outside and tip them on their sides to dump the water. This would be problematic with a large heavy container. A downtube that you could stick a siphon in would work. The interior stand could be another pot. Generally, I find that to be a bad idea. Sometimes it works and is the right height, but not usually. I make a stand out of 3/4" PVC at the exact right height. This leaves the bottom with as much open space as possible and therefore the greatest capacity for water. You want that void to be empty, no lava rock or anything. That just takes up space unnecessarily. Don't use paper to fill voids. This will be a humid environment and the paper will get funky. Long strand sphagnum moss works well. It also works well as a mulch so that you don't see two pots. If you need to take up a considerable amount of space between the two pots, cut pieces of Styrofoam insulation board and glue them to one of the pots. You don't want stuff falling down into the void if you have remove the interior pot. Just use a couple dabs of window caulk. It can be a good idea to size the interior pot small enough to be able to get a 1/2" pvc stand tube in there between the two pots. This will allow you to stick a smaller tube in there to siphon out the water. You don't need to drill additional holes in a terra cotta pot.

I thought I posted this on the gardenweb forum. Now it's houzz? Had to sign up for a new user name. Anyway soo - you can get the Naked Gardener Compost or Debco Premium Potting Mix from Masters (closing soon). Course Perlite is from The Perlite & Vermiculite Factory Myaree (much cheaper than anywhere else). Sand I got from a bulk landscape place (lawn mix) but you can get 10 or 20kg bags of builders sand at Bunnings. Zeochlor is in the pool section at Bunnings. Rock Dust I got from the manufacturer direct somewhere in Bibralake (called Natural PK) but I think but you can now get a similar product from Waldecks (in Myaree at least). Waldecks also sell bentonite clay. I still want to try the gritty mix but getting my hands on all the materials has proved very difficult when I tried last year. I found a Queensland company that makes course DE (for mopping up oil/chemicals) but they didn't have a distributor in Perth. Nobody I could find has pine bark in the right size - and even if they did I'd have to by a cement mixer and modify it with a fine wire to screen it. Honestly, if an agricultural company were to produce the gritty mix and sell it in bags I think they'd make bank - even considering how long it lasts.

Aqaruim gravel in this pic would be okay to use primarlay as a top dressing and maybe a piece or two ( small amount) in a grity mix soil but it's just to polished or not pourus enough to be relaiable. Personaly I wouldn't use the AKA river polished materails as an ingrediant in part of a gritty mix. There proberly is a Ph balance use or a potted plant application ( Proberly a few 1000 if I had to guess.) for it but I hadn't used what the google pic shows in anything here. Keep it simple. Even in 100 % pourus sifted sand a lithop is at a five star Ritz Carlton when potted here. While out grit shoping think sizeable by sifting materails that are both pourus and sharp. Tom I was checking my email throughout the day and I didn't know if you got my email address. I am already back from Largo, and I was at Haines City before that. I was hoping to have gotten your phone# while I was up there so I could have stopped by. I bought 8 bags of the 6/14 silica sand so at least I have something, but I still would prefer the Gran-I-Grit. Tom, how long is the wait once you order it from that feed store? Is the product actually Gran-I-Grit, or some different named stuff, and is it similar in size and structure? I still might take you up on the offer for the grit when I stop back up that way. We need to exchange emails again if you nerver got my email.

Grit/Granite holds ~14% moisture on its surface.
Lava rock (scoria) holds less overall moisture than Turface, and the pores are quite large. I absolutely love working with it.

So basically, lava rock is right between grit and turface. That would lead me to believe that if used to replace any fraction of grit, it will add moisture, and if used to replace any fraction of turface, it would reduce moisture. So, if I were to use 1:1:1 of all three, it would pretty much hold the same moisture as my current 1:1 turface/grit combo.

Good news is, even up here in Wisconsin, I've found a source of red lava pebbles either in bulk or in 60# bags. The size they claim is 3/8" and under, which seems good to me. I will obviously sift out the fines like I do turface, but what size should I sift on the upper end?

What a great resource!
Sift at 3/8 inch, if you need to remove some large pieces. Rinse the lava rock many times...it has so much of that red silt, it's amazing ;-)

It's amazing what you can find when you try. I've got great sources for turface, #2 cherry stone, which I believe is the finest looking grit you'll find with its purple color, and now lava rock. The killer around here is the pine bark fines, which I had, but the source dried up. I don't use it anymore anyway, so it's ok. Heck, I even discovered a source of not-so-common succulents this spring.

As for the rock, I'll have 120# of it, so I think I will be set for a while. I'm thinking whatever I sift out that's too big I will relieve a little stress and bust it up into smaller pieces. Unfortunately, this idea has come after all my repotting this year, so I won't have anything to pop into my new mix.....unless of course I buy more stuff. Either way, thanks for the input, as well as the nice pictures scattered around the forums that inspired me to seek out lava rock.

Where did you find Red Lava Pebbles? We live in Madison, and used to get them from Menards, but they no longer sell them.

Sounds like you have found some great resources in your area for soil building. Very nice indeed. I have never used cherrystone and cannot find it locally but I know some people on here use it and really like it in their containers.

Some people also use lava rock (scoria) in their mixes and report great success. Again, have not found a source of it in my area but I will keep my eyes open for it. They have some lava rock at places that sell grilling supplies but the pieces I've seen are much too large for container use.

The great thing with these mixes is that growers in different areas of the country, or the world, can substitute materials found locally and build with a soil that works well for their plants.
