Landscape and alternative to boxwood

Hi all,

Does anyone have a suggestion for an alternative to boxwood that won't get winter damage in an exposed site and isn't a conifer? It'd take some convincing for me to go with a conifer.

Background:

I started landscaping my new house last fall and I have a ways to go. Right now I have a bed on the east side of my house that needs some help (house faces south). The spot gets good morning sun in heavy clay soil.

I've got a Diablo ninebark on the south east corner with coreopsis in the foreground and a grass to the north of it for "winter interest." But then I've got 16 or so feet from there to the north end of the bed that's sitting empty. I had a boxwood on the north end that got 75% winter damage since it's such an exposed spot. That sucker's going in the trash but I want something to give some green in the winter. Any ideas and/or companion suggestions?

Thanks!
