'Natural' signs for when to plant

I have read before that Native Americans relied on nature to tell them when to plant certain crops like when I believe the dogwood(?) or whatever tree releases the cotton like seeds and its like snow its time to plant corn (something like that, read it a long time ago). I have been observing all the little plants around me coming up like dandelions and my mint (just barely) and other weeds. Then there are some turnips I left in the ground from last year and they are now greening. Which makes me think it might be okay to plant some things outside like turnips or kale. The Canadian Geese are flying overhead and I wonder if that could be a sign, I have also heard of people always planting XXXX on St. P's day. Plants and animals know more about the weather than all those fancy radars, weather balloons, and satellites anyway.

So what signs of nature are there for planting and does anyone here follow any?
