Vegetable garden near septic field

I am planning on expanding my garden this year in my back yard, and where I'd like to expand along my back fence is pretty close to where I believe the septic field is for my house. The house and septic system are about 40 years old and most of the residential septic systems that age in my area are starting to fail. Is having a vegetable garden near the field a problem? I'm planning to have raised beds and add about 12 yards of organic compost to the beds. Can I test the soil for potential septic problems? If I can't put my bed exactly where I want it, how far does it have to be from the edge of the field?
