dried edges on leaves of Kale plants (purple spots on edges)

Hey guys, I've had pretty good success at growing cold weather stuff in the past however this year I decided to make my own soil-less blend. I took petemoss and vermiculite and perlite as well as some blood and bone meal (not much at all). Mixed it all up in a big box and this was to be used for my seed starting mix. Anyway, its been about a month and a half of growing things and I have some weird things going on with my kale (Black Tuscan aka cavolo nero) and curly kale. Pics are below....what am I doing wrong

the labeling on my box of blood meal says: "do not use on seedlings". presumably because the N can burn them...

Maybe so, but I still think it may be another problem. I didn't start them with bone and blood meal, that was after I transplanted them into the 8 oz cups. When is the ideal time to add some nutrients for them, surely there can't be enough in just the petemoss can there? Any other ideas?

mints can do better in the shade with little direct sun. I am in zone 8, temps hovering near 100F now and my mints are doing ok, not as good as spring time though. I would suggest that you move your mints to a mostly shady location and water them more frequently. But no matter what you do, they will no be as tender as they used to be in the sprng

It could be either too much dampness or a fungal disease if it seems to be spreading. In any case, I think the best solution would to be to cut back on the watering, pull out any nearby weeds and aerate the first couple inches of the soil by hand. If it looks like my bartzella where it looks like there are spots of the leaves that are dried up, that would likely be related to sun burn which occured while the leaves were still growing. Looking again, I see some purple spots. Does this fit with the description in Jim Little's book of anthracnose? These are several rooted cuttings in the same pot. It says to destroy all leaves with the disease. Should I cut off all of the leaves? Wouldn't the cuttings die, or at least grow dormant this early? I live in So. Cal, mild zone 9 weather all year.

That's a boron deficiency. Get some eyewash solution (contains boric acid and sodium borate) from the drugstore and water with 1 tsp of eyewash/gal of water and it will clear right up.

Nutrient deficiency. Squirt with a liquid fert at half strength once a week for two weeks and see what you get. If you have MG that will do.

If you are going to do your own mix you need to give the plants some food. This year I used a granular 5-6-6 and so far seems to be OK, I expect to add a liquid in maybe 2 weeks.

Looks particularly like potassium deficiency, among others. What was the % of vermiculite in the mix? Try some liquid fert. as suggested above.

Yeah I was thinking it was a deficiency myself. I didn't real measure adding the vermiculite...I would say maybe about 10-15 percent, again not sure. I probably should have added far more perlite. I'll add some ferts for a few weeks and see what happends. How much should I add to each cup?
