Container Gardening

My very first tomatoes!

I have killed Pothos, it's true. I have never grown or successfully kept alive a green thing in my LIFE. And now, my friends, I HAVE A TOMATO! Three little babes, really, and I cannot properly express how excited and proud I am. . . I want to shout it from the rooftops :)

LOL! Your posts are cracking me up, mainly because I could be writing them (except I only have have buds so far, no fruit set).

This is my my first year growing anything too, and I planted everything in MG Organic potting mix, then later read about the problems with it. Apparently your tomatoes like it just fine though!

What type of tomato is that in the picture? One of the early varieties? I'm in NJ, and mine aren't anywhere close to that stage :-( Have you been getting a lot more sun than we have? I swear, 5 out of every 7 days have been cold and/or drizzly here for this entire spring.

(I nearly fainted with joy at the discovery of a few buds on three of my tomatoes the other day. I actually went back in and called three people.) Meadowlark, yes, I love Alabama. Sylvia and I both say we are moving to the Gulf when I retire (only 8 more years). We love to walk through the yard each evening. I have to walk the cat after Jeopary goes off at 7 p.m. and we all enjoy early evening. We have daylilies, clematis, brugmansias, gardenias and hydrangeas in bloom. After all of the rain, the potted tropical hibiscuses have been full of blooms. Not only does the yard look good, it smells good as well. Mimidi, I saw my first lightning bugs over a week ago, here in Hueytown. My granddaughter (4 y/o) is spending the night and she said she wanted catch lightning bugs, that was before we went to Krispy Kreme. After she ate doughnuts she went to her room. I don't guess we will catch lightning bugs tonight.

OM89, that makes sense for what you're actually growing, your area must be much more like Silvia's. I've given up on growing squash in containers, they don't do well and I've come to the conclusion that although the roots don't appear substantial they are runners and need lots of space so that would account for them not doing well in a SFG. Also, what Lou says about the squash is true and I have to be at work by 6:00 A.M., by the time I get home in the afternoon all the morning flowers from the squash are already too spent to hand pollinate. The last two seasons I've tried two varieties of parthenocarpic squash but they didn't do well either. Now, the parthenocarpic cukes were another story, they did very well inside my swiming pool cage where I didn't have to spray for pickleworm, the quick nemesis of my garden cukes since the garden is only 8' from the lake...very buggy down there until we finally get a cooling off period overnight. I keep my tomato plants well spaced from each other due to the gardens proximity to the lake, extremely humid too, and I never have blight and rarely other fungal diseases because of good air circulation around each individual plant, so for me "less is more" but I do see Silvia's plants up against each other so for you that might not be a problem. For zone 5a I fear I'd have to say yes, too late. But I wouldn't give up on them till after frost. You might get lucky, get a late frost, and have time for some fruit to develop. And, when that first freeze warning comes, if there are green tomatoes on the plants, go ahead and pick them, wrap them individually in paper, place them single layer in a cardboard box, and check them every few days. Most will ripen. Alternative (if you have the space) is to pull up the whole plant, hang it UPSIDE DOWN by the roots in the basement, barn or other cool dry place, and the fruit will ripen on the vine. Worth a try - won't get many but you will get some. Next year it's earlier planting. ;) Dave

Ok, first Gregori's was wrong, I checked back in my garden Journal and it was actually 'Sasha's Altais Pride' and from what I understand it is a Medium sized red round but not perfect round tomato, but out of the 3 I planted only 2 fit that description and they were late for me.The 1 that was not a medium sized roundish red grew to be a saladette sized tomato perfect and red and round. That is the one I believe left the volunteer because only the color came out different this year. The shape, size, trusses , growth and spot in the garden,is exactly the same as last years plant. The red in the picture I clearly stated was just for reference ie:color , and I also said that it was a Campari NOT the red cherry that I believe is the parent of the Brown one in the picture. That parent was a plant from last season not this season so I couldnt put up a picture of it as it has been dead since last FALL :) So as for mix up of seeds, that would have occured last season which would have been why I got a NOID large Red Cherry/Saladette instead of the Sasha....the cross I also believe occured last season , and this is the result of it.Of course apparently I could be wrong and the cross may have started with the person before me that I got the Sasha's seeds from...who knows ...I just thought that possibly one or both of the parents might show itself during a grow out...but what do I know, I truly am no scientist LOL!! 'No you will never know if its other parent is Green Zebra or Black fron Tula or any other tomato' seems to be where the answer to my original post is heading, ROTFLMBO

I did read your caul/broc post and thought the same thing, especially about the constant fussing with the plants! I keep saying I need a new hobby to distract me from my new hobby :)

The picture is of a Patio Hybrid that I bought almost a month ago from an awesome local greenhouse. It was already a hearty lookin' thing with one bunch of flowers when I brought it home. It remained in it's temp container until 5/13 when I transplanted it into the "20.

We've only just started to warm up around here and, until this week, I've been hauling all of my tomatoes into the garage overnight. I even bought a cart the night we had a frost so that I could bring EVERYTHING in.

We've had a lot of rain and general drear, but some nice sunny days too. I'm originally from East Brunswick NJ and every time I talk to my mom, we're having similar weather. I think I just got the jump because the plant was well established when I bought it and I've been diligent about protecting it from the cold. My Home Depot Early Girl and home-started seedlings have yet to flower.

Anyway, I'm glad I bought it because this is absolutely the best encouragement I could ask for!

My BF tells me and I'll tell you: You don't have to worry so much--plants grow, it's their thing!
