Can Hardy Giant Asian pears tolerate some frost?
Comments (6)Mine here in Michigan generally hang on until about Veteran's day before its cold enough to damage them, assuming I don't pick them first. While the leaves are still on the tree, it protects them a lot. I'd say 25/26 degrees is about the cutoff, as stated above. Luckily here, wasps aren't such a big probably after about the first week in October, they tend to mostly die off and go away, with just a few stragglers. As far as keeping them goes -- I STILL have some of last years fruit in the fridge, in some of those Debby Meyer Green Bags. Those stupid things really DO work. The fruit is still crips, but I've found, since it's sort of on artificial "life support" it needs to be used in a couple of days, or it goes bad fast once taken out of the bags. I also agree with harvestman -- if you want to store them, it's better that they're not too overly ripe on the tree, somewhat greener stores better....See Morefrost tolerance of mature onions
Comments (4)How long do you leave the water off ? In the past I grew the onion sets, and they never died down. In the past 6 years or so I've grown my own from seed. That gets started in January and planted out in early May with mulch and row cover as we still get nights in the mid 20's. The past 2 years I have tried several varieties, searching for the best storage onion and hopefully finding one that can produce seed in our short climate. Last year I grew Copra as the standard, even though its hybrid. Then Bronze d'Amposta, yellow of Parma and Brown Spanish. Brown Spanish and yellow of Parma stored all winter and are now racing to see who makes seed. One kind is in a neighbors garden miles away. Can you suggest any great storage onions that have a shorter maturity ? The shortest I've seen are 90 - 100 days. Thanks for any ideas, Jean in Mt...See MoreChinese cabbage...frost tolerant???
Comments (2)The Chinese cabbages are somewhat frost tolerant but will show damage in a freeze. This is especially true if the foliage is kind of wet at the time of the temperature drop. To be on the safe side, have some covers, not plastic, available to toss over the plants if temps go much below just a touch of frost. Even if the heads aren't fully formed, they will still be nice for salads or slaws....See MoreFrost tolerance
Comments (4)I grow most of my plants outdoors in pots and in the ground. Have had frosts down to -10C with no problems with the cactus I grow. Succulents are more difficult. Successful cactus are Trichocereus, Soehrensia, Cleistocactus, Oreocereus, Ferocactus and various others like even Mammillarias and Notocactus I had in pots outdoors this past winter through frosts. They weren't out in the open but under a pergola, but got very cold all the same. A Cotyledon sp. right next to them frosted off. It is all trial and error. And in my opinion, the plants I have mentioned are not kept dry in these conditions either as it is a winter rainfall area. I have had no plants rot off the 20 yrs growing out in the ground out in the open. More problems with heat extremes in the summer. It is all down to species sellection. Joylene.
