OK, I checked again, the hosta are about 3x bigger than when I first planted them, there are so many more leaves than when it first started out. I imagined Hosta should work in the area. The Tiarella is only half the size it used to be. It's the only surviving companion plant. Jack Frost Brunnera didn't come up this year. I am guessing that it may need more water than hostas, so the drought last year may have killed it off. Paul

I think you're right about the undulata albomarginata and the other one doesn't have flowers yet to know how they smell but I think from the picture at the link it's the green undulata. While out in my yard this morning I found yet a 3rd kind of hosta I had planted under some pines---fortunei aureo marginata. I'm setting up a gardening notebook and want to identify and document everything in my yard. I've never gardened before the last few years. I've accumulated plants to fill our yard from family, friends and just purchasing things on a whim. Now I want to learn more about what I have---I sort of put the cart before the horse but it's been fun. Thanks, again.

"the medium in there will become unable to support the plant " Just a little side issue, medium does not or should not support the plant. The term "soil-less" mix means just that is isn't soil and doesn't act like soil. Potting media only provides something to hold the plant upright while we deliver the food and water. My experience is as the hosta fills the container with roots and divisions it begins to produce smaller and smaller leaves. If you want that planter and that plant then divide, if you want to grow the plant as large as possible then move up in pot size every 3 years or so. Also move up larger than the old advice with indoor plants of one pot size. Double the volume or if it is a 5gal pot then go to 10 gal. Also the deeper vs. diameter the pot the easier it is to grow and water. A rule to use is when the leaves are smaller than the previous year then it needs to be moved up in pot size.
