Help! Reclaiming asphalt driveway.
Comments (9)Nice looking raised beds. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there is little that you top off the asphalt with that is inexpensive and have it wear well and look great. The least expensive material would be mulch and that would just wear too messy . Then you step up to crushed gravel and it would have to be retained to keep from spreading out , so it too would wear messy and there would need to be some construction accommodations made for the elevation levels. Personally I find asphalt a benign product that is inexpensive to install and maintain. But if you do not like it you might think about removing it or parts of it . It usually is very easy to remove. The amount shown in the photo would come out in a matter of minutes after the edges and borders were cold cut. If it were my property I might cut out a ribbon and lay in a mosaic band or matching brick or tile band at the entry to the raised bed courtyard and leave the field of the asphalt. Next to the house I would probably have 2 or 3 raised narrow boxes built so to soften the field of the asphalt where it meet the side of the house. I'll attach a photo of a project that we did a few years ago where we removed the asphalt and installed an exposed aggregate concrete and stone mosaic band. It might pique your imagination to some ways that you could work with your own asphalt challenge....See MoreBest time to repave asphalt driveway?
Comments (2)I'm an office manager for an asphalt paving company and the best time to pave your drive is when you want it done. We're suburban, northwest of Chicago, so our work is seasonal. We pave mid April through December, weather permitting and asphalt plants open. When you say "repaved" are you going to have it all pulled out and new asphalt put over your existing stone or do a full depth with stone and asphalt new or just a resurface (primed and then asphalt put over your existing asphalt)? A simple remove and replace, using your stone, won't have any settling effect and neither will a resurface. A full depth remove and replace will settle in time. All stone settles so eventually the asphalt will crack in places. This is a normal thing due to the expansion of the ground during the winter and summer months. A hot, dry summer is worse on them than winter. Jan...See MoreAsphalt driveway dilemma. Please help!
Comments (10)Here's the link showing the asphalt going down after the paver edging is set. Just requires some care. To be doubly secure of a firm edge, I would anchor the paving stones with an edging restraint. (Not shown.) The one-inch cap on our driveway was put down by the previous owner, within the last 15 years, I gather from the neighbours. The section pictured began falling apart after the POs removed the dumpster they used to "pack"; no protective plywood was placed under it. You can also see the crack patterns that are everywhere. I don't know when these started reappearing. (It's a teardown, so I don't care much.) Since the expected useful life of an asphalt driveway is ten years, according to HUD (see table C-3), I'd say they got their money's worth....See MoreDriveway/Asphalt Sealers - Your opinions, review, warnings..
Comments (20)DON'T USE JETCOAT SEALER... I purchased 17 buckets of this so called sealer with a 6 year warranty. What a joke this sealer and company is. After putting this sealer down in April 2018, it is wearing/dissolving away daily. My driveway has numerous wear/light spots that the sealer is now completely gone off the asphalt. I tried the warranty and customer service...guess what...it is the installer/my fault that this sealer didn't last 6 months. First, it was due to the low temperature that I applied the sealer in although the highs were in the low 80's. Next, it was the cure time wasn't enough with the temperature that I applied the sealer in. Lastly, I didn't apply two coats although the application label said "should" apply two coats and the Warranty says "must" apply two coats. Just and underhanded way to keep anyone from winning a warranty claim. My advice...use any other type of sealer but this junk....See MoreYardvaark
