Found this on the web, thought it was a good quote for a gardening forum:

I bought a cactus. A week later it died. And I got depressed, because I thought, Damn. I am less nurturing than a desert.

The irony in the quote is that Mr. Martin likely killed his cactus because he was more nurturing than the desert.

Also, I am pretty certain he wasn't using Al's gritty mix. ;)

The quip attributed to Michael Shoup (a southern gentleman) about dead folk growing roses brings to mind other southerners' irreverent remarks about the departed that I've found entertaining. When I moved well south of the Mason-Dixon, I was surprised (and kind of fascinated, to tell the truth) to learn that in some quarters of southern society there persists an adherence to certain rigid, rather baroque rules of etiquette -- including funeral etiquette. That guy is comedian who was making joke (is on youtube)...

I live in high desert (great basin/eastern sierra), and tell you from first hand this mountain desert is use Al mix exclusively...these will include Bristlecone and Pinyon pine bark fine and these perfect size decompose granite.

Is amazing to watch on rock hill. Small juniper and the bristlecone cling to rock but root find gritty mix in crease. These make good life, long life. Is miracle they grow. They figure out this many time ago ;-)

I could send bag of natural gritty mix from high desert with fine barks of Bristlecone and Juniper and Pinon (is all pines barks and these natural granites, very small appropriate size) to you. I will expect many thanks, over 150 please. If not work for you, you will be first. :o)

Sirca you make a very good point. Maybe when I move back home to the rockies I can go find my own gritty mix w/ out buying it.

Is true.

But is not easy to find as we wish. Some spot in mountains have much decomposted granite in good size in piles. Other time is mixed with wrong size pieces. Look for right spots to save time. Easy to sift with screen anyway. Is like panning for gold.

Your Al mix is smart idea to all.

I am to say this. Is not to hurt feeling or bring eye tear. For organic piece of soils, I use this coconut husk not pine barks to my plants (the Citrus, the Fig, Adenium, Plumeria, Bursera, Agave, the Tea Oils Tree, Lauris nobilis, the many exotic vine, and is still many more). I try both coconut and pine from orchid shop (expensive!). Plant grow same in both, happy in balance in sun life and winter night to dormants. Coconut better to buy for me, big cube pressed. Is last longer not break down fast! Is important! Why because bad drainage happen when pine bark brake down to small dirts. I change coconut huks 2 year sometime 3 (sometime 1 if to repot but is still good for use to other plant).

I wash in epsom salt water, is what they say and I am not to argue. Is said important doing this somewhere I forgot. Maybe Chronicle? Is possible but is not Playboy I am sure! ;o)
