Sweet Potato Slip Help

I have a store-bought sweet potato growing in a jar in my kitchen. I went to our two local nurseries and was told they don't carry any slips or even seed potatoes. I didn't want to order any online since I only wanted a few to start out and $$ is tight so I figured I'd try one from a store bought sweet potato and see what happens.

Here are my questions (and I did do a search for these and didn't find any definitive answers):

1) I wait until the slips are about 6 inches before cutting them off, right????

2) When I cut them off do I then place them in a vase of water and wait for them to grow roots or do I just place them in the ground? (I've read both ways are right...)

3) Exactly what do I do with the slip in the garden? Do you plant it deep - like fully underground... or does part of it stick up at the surface? Do I hill them?

Thanks in advance for your time!!!

Kate
