garden devastation - need help !
Comments (26)You don't even need frames - just mound new soil up, don't plant anything with really deep roots that would go into contaminated soil if you are putting the beds in the same spot. My mentor in a USDA-sponsored class for beginning women farmers has all her stuff that needs lots of water/weeding/attention in raised/mounded beds near the house, none of them have frames and they are planted rather intensively ala Square Foot Gardening. We're going to be doing the same sort of thing once it dries out enough - but doing tomatoes, cukes, etc. in long rows rather than 4'x4' beds, think it would be easier to trellis long rows (20'-25' long x 1-2' wide, with 2-3' paths) than beds laid out in a grid, since we're growing for market. I've even seen pix on this forum of so-called "self-watering containers" (though I don't get the self-watering part), basically a big plastic container filled with dirt so maybe your dad can use those for the next year? The surface/ plant would also be higher than most raised beds (think 18-30 gallon containers) so would be easier for him to reach, and I think you could apply SFG to those. If it's just for him (not extended family) I would think you wouldn't need a whole lot of containers either. You'll have to post pix of the garden once things start growing. I'd love to see what he harvests this year! Here is a link that might be useful: Mounded beds...See MoreChipmunks!!! Must protect my blueberries! Help!
Comments (19)I've been using peanut butter as glue and birdseed or dried corn kernels as the bait. As far as the traps go, I much prefer the plastic reusable ones that are sort of like a giant clothespin to the metal and wood flat ones. Alvin, Theodore, and Simon won't know what hit them. You guys are really using almonds to lure chipmunks? They'll eat "lesser" fare -- get a pound of really cheap birdseed mix out of the bulk bin at the pet, feed, or general merchandise store for about $0.35, a jar of the cheapest peanut butter you can find (store brand is still $1 here for 16 ounce jar), and eat the almonds yourselves! Oh, and FWIW, chickens LOVE dead chipmunks. Who knew they were so carnivorous? You just have to "start" it for them with a shovel, I guess the skin is tough....See MoreTrimmers devastated my lilies - is there any hope?
Comments (3)Julianna, that is terrible! I can feel your pain... I agree with the previous poster: they will survive, but you will probably loose most of this year blooms. Leave as much foliage as possible. In fact, professional growers remove blooms to make bulbs stronger. Last year deer ate tops of my newly purchased and very expensive Lilies right about the time of blooming. I was so upset. A month later, my DH pulled my 'Landini' Lilies out of container and THREW THEM AWAY! He never helps me with gardening, but that time he decided to "weed"... I managed to collect some scales and bulblets. Some of them are growing for me right now. In a couple of years I will see my 'Landini' blooming again... I try to not leave contractors unsupervised....See MoreCardinal 11 day old nestlings bothered by chipmunk - help!
Comments (2)Chipmunks and Squirrels are avid predators of bird eggs and nestlings. I'm not sure if the chipmunk can take a nestling of that size? I had Robins nesting right outside my kitchen window last year, and watched them progress while doing the dishes in the morning, and they were pretty big at that stage. I have a cat who catches most of the chipmunks. She doesn't get all of them, but she keeps their population largely under control. In your case I would NOT TOUCH the Ficas tree at all - you will disturb the nestlings and possibly stimulate their instinct to abandon the nest. You could try a trap for the chipmunks?...See Moregardenman101
