Does it damage seeds to freeze them or does variety matter?
Comments (7)Freezing only works if the seeds are well dried first and most home seed savers just don't dry their seeds that well. Any moisture left in the seeds will freeze and rupture the cell walls - end result, if not mush, in non-viable seeds. Professional seed suppliers have access to much better drying equipment and flash freezing equipment not available to the home seed saver. And freezing isn't necessary anyway. With the exception of a few flower varieties and members of the allium family, most all seeds will store fine for many years if just kept cool, dry, and out of direct sun or high humidity. You will find many discussions about how to properly save and store seeds over on the Seed Saving forum here (linked at the top of the page on this, the Growing from Seed Forum). Comments (8)Home Depot and its cousins in the big-box store category are what are called "best value" or "operationally efficient" companies. Their success lies in the fact that they can offer the lowest price. They work with suppliers to get the lowest prices that they pass on to the customers. They also keep other costs low including costs of labor. That means that overall, they don't hire truly knowledgeable staff to properly service plant-buying customers nor enough staff over enough hours to properly maintain the plant material. For those customers who appreciate "best value" and think of it as the most important criteria in purchasing plants, then Home Depot and the rest are certainly the places to buy. It behooves you (and other "best value" customers) to do your homework first -- read as much as you can about the plants you want to buy (yes, that means knowing what you want to buy first and what plants are right for your garden). It also means that you should know when their shipments come in to be there before the plants have a chance to sit around without proper care for too long. Roger's -- and other good independent nurseries -- are what are called "customer intimate" types of companies. Their focus is on taking care of the customer (WELL BEYOND just saying "good morning" and "thank you for shopping"). They have extra costs that "best value" companies usually shave on, particularly when it comes to staffing. "Customer intimate" companies hire intelligent employees and more of them. Those costs are offset by the higher prices you'll find at such places. Customers that want top-notch service are willing to pay the higher prices. If you -- and other nursery shoppers -- need to know what are the correct plants, how to properly plant those plants, how to take care of those plants, and what to do with the plants if you have problems, then Roger's and other good independents are the place to shop. The extra price you pay is for the service. Consider it a tip at a good restaurant. The quality of the plants at both Home Depot and Roger's is the same. And not. Home Depot, and most other big box stores, pretty much buy from the same main suppliers as the independents. What happens to the plants soon after arrival, though, can make a big difference. Of course, Home Depot and the others big-boxers offer life-time guarantees: no matter what happens to the plant or why, they'll replace it or refund the purchase price. That means they don't want to bother helping you figure out the reason why the plant died and it's a small consolation for a lot of sweat that you've put into the plant. Comments (14)I don't know where you're located, but here in the DC area, Hecht's dept. store has had some amazing sales on kitchenaid mixers (I think all 3 models). I don't remember specifics, but it seemed that if you hit their reduced price and used the store coupon, the prices were about 1/3 off. I'm not sure if you could do this on Hechts.com (they do have a website, but I'm not positive that's it) or there might be a local dept. store near you that sometimes has great sales. It seemed better than 20% off. I'd like to ask some mixer advice. I've never had an electric mixer (at age 47) and never really baked (and am fairly inexperienced at cooking too - though i intend to change that). So I thought this purchase was not one I needed right away (new kitchen etc.) - unless I discovered that I'd use it. Two things have made me reconsider. One is that I really like The Barefoot Contessa cookbook, and in many recipes she says to use a mixer with paddle attachment - [can I substitute and use the plastic blade in a food processor - or is that too weak]. And then my mother came to help me sort through my kitchen equiptment. She believes that having an electric mixer is close to essential in a kitchen. Again, I don't know if I can substitute a food processor. Other than for baking cakes, what would I use a mixer for that I couldn't handle with combination of electric hand mixer, old immersion blender, food processor? And finally - which KA mixer should I get. Is bigger better - or is it overkill if you're not a serious baker? Thanks everyone....See MoreDoes where you buy matter?
Comments (12)No, I do not think so unless there is a problem in the delivery. The other area might be if you are not happy with the appliance but it is not defective or it is defective and the defect is such that you would not want another one from the same company. Some places will take it back for a limited time, many will not. I would ask about that ahead of time and you may find you get different answers, although whether any place will honor what they tell you is a different matter. If your product just needs to be serviced within the regular warranty period, as long as the dealer was authorized to sell the product, it does not matter because the manufacturer services it, not the dealer. The warranties are expensive at Sears. I hate Sears because the price match thing is a hassle and the one time I tried it, they did not have the item in stock (neither did Lowes who had the best price). Since it was a fridge and I was desperate I ended up negotiating something with a local appliance store. We have bought from the local appliance place before and after but a couple of years ago they really tried to rook my DH on a big screen TV. He ordered a Sony from them that was about 200 cheaper (on 2000) at Amazon and every place else. We ended up canceling the order and I am no longer interested in buying from the small place. I am not using my hard earned money to subsidize the owner's new Infiniti (yes he does own one, I know him personally) Lowes often has the cheapest in our area but their price tends to fluctuate. I check online first. I bought a freezer a year ago from Lowes, my local small store would have charged over 100 more plus delivery. At Lowes it was free. The price did vary by about 50 from week to week and I made sure to get the low end. I have also used a web based Appliance Buy Phone Service. I had no problems, it was 100 cheaper than any place else. It was delivered by PC Richards which is a local appliance chain but was not sold by them...See Morebsntech
