I forgot to gather all the purple Tiger Lilly bublets last year and now have dozens of lillies coming up around the clump.

Anyone want some? Contact me to send a self addressed postage paid envelope.

Marni and Russ, Don't do any cutting just yet, Marni! The dahlia imperialis root is a far different beast than a regular garden sized dahlia tuber or clump. It sounds like you got the roots and cut-off stump from last year's growth which is a great place to start. I have grown a d. Imperialis and would choose a site where you can give it the best sun, heat, and tallest support possible. It is a dahlia "tree" after all, and aptly named. To encourage the eyes, if any, perhaps bury it in loose damp soil or potting mix and expose to heat and light. I like to be able to see signs of life before I got to the trouble of planting any sort of dahlia. The eyes should be well below the stump, on the structure or crown that flares outward before the real tuberous roots begin. The eyes are burgundy/reddish, at least on mine. When planted, I put the eyes about 5 inches below soil level, similar to a regular garden dahlia. A whiskey barrel works well with adequate watering. Sorry I don't have a photo of the root mass, but here are early shoots and the stump from 2 years ago.

I find they spread, but slowly. A trench boarder seems to slow them down. I like them, they will grow in total shade, like under a evergreen; looks better than wood chips. They are easy to dig up and transplant, that what I do to control the creeping edge. If you want them to grow less vigorously, don't use compost or mulch. Very few weeds grow in a healthy lily patch. Tiger lilies behave similarly, except they will let some weeds grow. I intermixed them with ferns, no weed issues. If you ignore either of these plants for years, they will spread, but no match for my Toro. I have bamboo from next door, now that's invasive! A trick for growing bamboo is to use a plastic garbage can sunk deep into the ground, one could use this technique for these lilies, but wouldn't have to go so deep (way too much work for me, though).

Hello, sorry I've been away a week. I need to clarify, these lillies are tiger lillies, orange with purple spots. The seedlings are up now.

I have never traded before, I need to find out the proceedure then I'll be glad to send you all some.

I don't need any, got plenty of my own, lol. I did want to tell you the best way to send them since nobody else has at least on this thread.

Each person will need to send you a padded envelope with a SASE and include postage for you to return the envelope with their plants. On the outside of the padded envelopes you or they will need to write 'live plants' so they won't be crushed at the P.O.

Hello everyone,
We had some rain this weekend, so I was able to dig Brenda's lillies. They go in the mail today.
If anyone else wants some, send me the padded envelope and SASE and I'll happily send you some. They are already getting close to 12 inches tall. Next year they'll bloom.
