Friend or foe?

My plan right now is to construct the asparagus bed to be roughly 4-6' wide by about 10-12' long. However, it suddenly occured to me that a space that large could prolly have another perennial in it. Since neither my wife nor I can stand horseradish, and artichokes wont grow as perennials around here, I thought about the other obvious one: rhubarb

Is it kosher to plant asparagus and rhubarb together? Obviously, not an interplanting, but close in proximity, say a few feet apart?

If they are spaced adequately I don't see why not.

Cardoons are another possibility. Similar to artichokes but hardier.

Two rhubarb plants will take half that bed, which is not a lot of asparagus to start with. Another possibility is interplanting with self-seeding greens, such as corn salad, arugula, or miner's lettuce (effectively perennial). They would not bother the asp, grow well in partial shade and you would get two crops. The big con is that they would then be incompatible with mulch, which is always a good idea in the asparagus bed. So your price for the second crop is weeding cmp to no weeding.

That is most likely a slime mold. It's harmless. Usually that happens with a lot of wet weather, and cloudy days. It will go away with dryer air and sun. You can get some leaf yellowing, but if your grass is healthy it will outgrow that.

Yes, L. inflata will try to blend in but the foliage is a bit coarser than L. siphilitica and the flowers tiny as you confirmed.

It looks like it could be Viburnum dentatum, Southern Arrowhead Viburnum. They aren't any trouble. Their leaves can be skeletonized by the larvae of a certain leaf beetle, (Pyrrhalta viburni).
