Just to clarify, no I don't plan on planting this now. This is for future reference.

I've found a variety of eggplant called black beauty in numerous online seed catalogs. Supposedly it's popular

for planting in a veggie garden because compared to other varieties of eggplant similar to it, it has a shorter maturing time.

My question is this. Is this variety of eggplant (black beauty) a bush type? By bush type I mean is it a compact variety and suitable to be grown in containers. It doesn't really specify in the description whether black beauty is or not in 90% of the online catalogs I've seen it in.

If this is a bush-type/compact variety of eggplant, what size container would you plant it in (please specify this information in gallons) and how many plants could you fit per container without overcrowding them?

One other question and this is regarding eggplant in general. Does it have a slow germination time? In general how long does it take for eggplant to germinate if you're planting it from seed?

Also what type of soil and fertilizing does eggplant prefer?

Black Beauty is older OP, which was used in commercial in the not too distant past. It has a very large teardrop shaped fruit. The plant is a bush but larger than most. It benefits from staking because the fruits are so heavy they bend the plant down. It is not an early maturing cultivar. I don't grow in containers , but there are a lot of folks around who can tell you what works for them. I think I would look for a smaller plant and fruit, unless I was using something the size of an earthbox. {{gwi:26580}}

I think when you pick a squash is personal preference. I think many people like to pick them early before the seed inside get too big. The holes on your broccoli leaves are most likely from cabbage moths, the white butterflies you see hovering over your broccoli plants. They lay their eggs and the little green worms make the holes in your leaves. They are easily controlled by using BT, which is an organic treat found at most nurseries in either liquid or powder form. Sorry, I can't comment on spider mites, I've never dealt with them.

I love eggplants. I have them growing in several different stages. I transplanted some just this week and have some planted over the last 4 weeks. I have some planted in spring, already been bearing fruit. I am in Dallas and I know there is plenty of time for fruiting. They won't flower until they are at least a month from transplanting. Depending upon the variety, may be even later. The heat we have had been good for at least this one crop.

Farmerdilla knows his stuff well. Those shown in pictures look well matured Asian eggplants. I am also growing Asian eggplants(Japanese ichiban). I made a mistake by direct sowing and it took a long time to germinate, because (I learned later that)eggplant seeds need a soil temp over 65F. But finally got them going. Then these flies or fleas(whatchoma callem?) kept drilling holes in the leaves. The leaves looked like French tulle. I should have covered them with French tulle instead. That was an experience (anothr name for mistake). Anyway, within past 30 days I have been harvesting a lot more. I bake them at 350F for about an hour and then freeze them. I have been making a lot of eggplant parmesan too, with my own tomato sauce.It is amazing that these eggplants are producing more now (that day highs are around 80F) than whet if wat over 90F. Off topic, same is true about my sweet peppers. cyrus I have a seed eggplant left on the bush. It is abot 14" long and about 3" in diameter. So I will have my own seeds for next year.

The calyx color is distinctive to the variety. it can be helpful for seed savers in distinguishing seed purity vs. a possible cross pollination issue. If you don't save seeds then it has no meaning other than ornamental as already mentioned. Dave
