Do bush zucchinis actually stay as bushes?

Last year I grew zucchini that I thought was bush zucchini; however, it's stem eventually got to be about 5 feet long and it grew sideways in my garden. So I'm wondering if it was really bush zucchini? And if so, the name is misleading... Is there any tricks to keep it as a bush instead of taking over 1/3 of my garden? I don't even like zucchini but my mom really wants it. :P I'd rather try corn this year! Can you build a trellis to keep it up or something (so I can grow both)? Instead of growing tall and bending? The plant seemed very heavy though... Thanks!
