Beginners Question- Transplanting Seedlings

I have grown broccoli, leek, and brussel sprouts to seedlings indoors, in peat discs.

Each disc has ~3 seedlings in it.

I plan to transfer them to small pots, and keep them in these during the hardening off stage until I put them in the soil.

Is it necessary to separate them now, or can I just transfer the peat disk into the potting soil? I'm concerned about disrupting the fine root structures.

I figured allowing them to grow more and get a little more robust before separating them out would allow them to tolerate the handling better.

Thoughts?

The Growing from Seed forum has some great FAQ's and discussions on this you'll want to check out.

Meanwhile, since you used peat pellets, be sure to remove the netting before transplanting them and know that separating seedlings in the pellets can be difficult and needs care. But it is easier and less damaging to the roots to do it while they are still small. Many just elect to snip the excess seedlings and keep just the best one in the pellet.

Then plant the pellets with the net removed into individual cups/containers with a good potting mix.

I added a link for easy viewing. Yes, you have some problems. With basil, dark lesions at the soil line often indicated fusarium, a common soil-borne fungus. May want to start over. The generalized tip burn can be from over fertilizing, but more likely overwatering with tainted water. Switch to spring water next year when you grow your seedlings indoors. Warmth and outdoor life may cure several of the small problems. Peel off the peat pots as you set out the plants, because they really don't like them at all. "To start indoors you'll need some lights".... this seems to be taken as gospel in the US but in the UK almost no domestic gardener uses lights. You can raise a lot of seedlings on windowsills or in a glass porch or sunroom, or, as Fatamorgana says, if you wait a bit you can just direct sow. I sometimes think people just like the technical side of lights and don't realise that lights are not absolutely necessary. Regarding parsley - it actually does better direct sown since it has a taproot and disturbance encourages premature bolting.

TT, I can't answer either of your questions but I will make a suggestion. If either/both or your plants do become established you may want to try grafting on some proper fruit-bearing scions to your root stock. There are plenty of people on these forums that would be willing to send you cuttings for postage or trade or if you know of anyone w/a nice tree you can ask for a few cuttings.
