Indoor Grow Light recommendation?

Hi! I'm thinking I want to replace the light (and add more) that I currently have for my indoor plants. It's a huge CFL bulb for hydro.

Can anyone recommend a good bulb?

I would consider one of the t5ho fixtures off ebay. I got one with four 48" bulbs for less than $80 -- DL844 I think it was. Ballasts by ballastwise, which is sort of a no-name company, but I had 10 of their t5ho ballasts running all winter and none had any problems.

I find the CFL to be more limiting in range and higher in price. I later changed to flourescent style, and am liking it better. You can really just walk into a store and get a flourescent light that is the correct levels or color range that you want, whereas with a CFL, it had to be ordered online (or at least, I never found a local place to get one).

And you can get that light with a customized fixture exactly with indoor plant lighting in mind, or just use it with another generic flourescent fixture that can do a similar job also.

What's your light level? If you don't have much light, perhaps coffee plants? They grow slow in the shade, but they do survive. And they flower with beautiful-smelling flowers, and yes, produce coffee cherries (although, again, don't expect them to produce well when kept small and in low-light situations)

Keyboarg, Thanks for clarify what you are looking for. You want a waft scent that you don't have to put your nose closer to it in order to smell it... If this is the case, you have a lot to choose from. You may end up like some of us here... run out of room soon..LOL I am not sure which zone you are in. But for me in zone 5 ,I would start with orchid... Sharry baby, Twinkle. Twinkle starts to bloom around Xmas till Jan. Sharry Baby blooms in Feb./Mar. Sharry baby can bloom for 1-2 months. Then Star Jasmine, mine blooms sometime in March-April, early spring. Jasmine Polyanthan. blooms in this time period too or earlier. After that, when the weather is warm, there are a lot more plants bloom . But if you want some scent for the later fall early winter, you also can grow French Perfume Jasmine which is blooming none stop for me since Oct. My sweet olive is blooming this time of the year. If you get a FudingZhu, it will bloom every 2-3 months. Night Bloom Jasmine has very strong scent, it will bloom in fall till this time of the year ( mine is still blooming) perfume the house at night. Also you can force some hyacinths or daffodils bulbs. Hyacinths has very strong fragrant . You will definitely notice its presents when it is in bloom... OOh, there too many to list... I am sure others will chime in... Hope this help

Sorry to hear about the induction light, but I'm not surprised that it sold that quick , that was a great price. Here is a great website that explains LED lights: http://ledgrowlightsreview.org/ From what I've seen and read, unless you buy a good LED unit which has quality leds with lenses and good heat sinks, as described in the the guide there, is good quality over all, the LEDs are useless. It's still fairly new technology and unless you're gonna get the top brands that implement those lenses you're just wasting your money. A good unit costs around $1000 from what I've seen. Those units that you found on craigs list are a waste of money imo. My overall suggestion is go with what's known to work. There is a reason why most indoor growers either use Fluorescent, Metal Helide and High Pressure Sodium lamps.... because they work :) Sure you'll see and hear great things about those UFOs from people on youtube but unless you personally know the person keep in mind that those people most likely are either trying to sell this stuff or are just full of it. Just ask yourself this, this person who is selling them only after a month! He praises them :) but still selling them :) If they were so freakin great why wouldn't he keep them???? My advise, once again is to invest in Florescent T5HO setup. It's compact, runs cool and energy efficient, easy to disassemble when you'll move again, you can grow different varieties of plants and it works. If you want higher yields/grow tall plants and have lots of room for these lights than go with MH and HPS combination. If you're set on the LEDs than go with quality brands and spend the money. I'm gladly sharing what I know with you so no need to say sorry. That's what these forums are for.

Is it possible to grow roses indoors? I'd say yes, with some major caveats. It won't be cheap and it won't be easy. I grow orchids, and I start rose cuttings with my orchids in orchidarium, which is indoors. I've grown those cuttings on, to some degree. The first hurdle is to provide enough light. When I mean enough light, I mean more light than even high-light cattleya orchids require. Keeping in mind that direct sunlight is 10,000 ft-candles, to grow a rose, you'd need to produce (my guess) at least 5-6,000 ft candles of light. This would be about 2 feet away from a 1,000 watt halogen bulb, which is about the size of a street lamp halogen. The new LED lights may be able to provide it at a lower energy cost. I tried one a few years ago, and it was a bunch of hype that didn’t work to grow even my low light orchids, but technology has improved since then. Okay, so this is roughly equivalent to shaded outdoor area, which as we know is enough to grow a rose (sort-of), but not enough to for it to bloom well. So you’d need to double that. I’ll let you figure out how much in your area that would be for electricity, because you’d want to run the lights at least 10 hours a day. Another thing to keep in mind is that the grow lights are of specific spectrum, so if you want normal colors you’d have to choose full spectrum lights. (Aside: this would include UV, which we know is part of tanning and promotes skin cancer and can damage the eyes, so you’d want to wear sunglasses and sunscreen, just as if you were gardening outdoors.) Then there is the issue of heat. The lights would generate heat, and the fans that are in many units help with that, which also would raise the temperature of the room. You might need some air conditioning in the room in the summer, or leave a window open in the winter, although you’d have to be careful not to let it get too cold at night. Having the days bright and warmer, and cooler and dark at night is good for orchids, I’m not sure if that is needed for roses. My roses seem to do best at temperatures lower, especially at night, than I typically keep my house and warmer during the day, like 50-60 F at night and 80F in the day. If you didn't want to induce dormancy, then you'd be best growing roses like Tea roses, which can grow in tropical areas. Something I’ve learned from growing cuttings indoors is that roses, like orchids, need air movement. Without it, too much light will burn the leaves, but perhaps most importantly they will be very prone to fungal diseases like mildew. So you’d want another fan to keep the air moving over the leaves. For a full size rose, you’d also need the space, and enough light units to cover the area of growth. Basically, you are trying to duplicate the conditions that the roses like, i.e. recreating the outdoors, but indoors. This would mean an appropriately sized room with full sun conditions, and air movement, enough root room (i.e. at least a 20 gallon container), certain humidity, watering and fertilizer. It’s doable, as you can see from greenhouse grown florist roses. You’d just have to have the space, energy and finances to create such a place.

I know that with the prices hydro shops etc. charge for bulbs
You probably wouldn't think $0.59 to $1 bulbs would work
But they do

Check at your bigger 99 cent stores
You can get 2600k 40w = 150w comparable spiral CFLs for a bux or less

I've used them to over winter my Nepenthes & a few other CPs indoors plus to grow other plants & they work just fine

You might even want to go to a HID lamp, but it really depends on what - and how much - you are growing. Does the CFL really do the job now? Will your indoor garden expand - either in plant size or number?

I agree with the T5 suggestion. I don't know what kind of square footage you're trying to light up, but a 6 lamp T5 high bay fixture with a silver reflector will grow pretty much anything. That'll light a 2'x4' area. Before I owned a house, I grew cacti and succulents under a 400w metal halide. Everything grew great, but the heat is intense. It would scorch any type of foliage plants if too close. It's also expensive to buy and operate. CFL lamps are almost too concentrated to grow under, unless you have a bunch. Also, I'd recommend a color temperature of 4100K or higher, for good foliage growth. Better would be an even mix of lower temperatures, like 2700 to 3500, and higher temperatures, like 4100 plus.

I've been looking online at eBay and Amazon trying to decide what to get and reading up on what works what doesn't, so much info.

I'm literally just trying to light up a few plants in my windowsill (10ft windows, but not convinced enough light is getting through---especially for my citruses). Maybe 2'x8" worth of area total that I want to add lights to.

I think these http://www.homedepot.com/p/EcoSmart-60W-Equivalent-Daylight-5000K-Twister-CFL-Light-Bulb-4-Pack-ES5M814450K/100687001 and the 100 watts from the same brand are what we use for regular lighting in our apt right now.

The Hydro CFL bulb I have on a couple plants does seem to be working, after I moved my citruses to another window they all started wilting so I think the light did have some benefit.

Oh sorry, I've got a Meyer Lemon, Key Lime, and Minneola Tangelo Tree. In another window I've got 3 cherry tomatoes, a cucumber, jalapeno, and banana pepper.

LEDs are expensive and not very bright. No more efficient than fluorescents and less reliable (in the case of cheap LEDs made for growing plants). Pass on them.
