My lettuce/kale has been in the cold frame for about 6 weeks, growing slowly at first but the weather is unseasonably warm lately (72 yesterday) so it should start to grow faster and be ready to start eating in 2-3 wks. We haven't had a freeze in about 2 weeks which makes it really nice because my seedlings are in the cold frame 24/7 instead of shuffling between indoors and outdoors. So far I have lettuce, onions (6-8 weeks old), parsley, oregano, broccoli, tomatoes and marigolds germinated in flats. Having trouble with my peppers for some reason (14 days so far at 85F so I might be starting over there). We're about 5 weeks from our average last frost date so in 2-3 weeks I'll start the warm season stuff indoors (watermelon, cucumbers, lima beans). I'll direct seed corn at last frost -1wk and okra at last frost +3. This year I'm having company visit June 25th which is about 1 week early for my corn so I might try experimenting with starting corn indoors 2-per 16oz cup 2 weeks before last in the cold frame and planting out 14-18 days later to see if I can get enough corn for dinner one night while they're here.

I started the first full week in feburary. I started 5 or 6 seeds each day during the week. I got basil, parsley, black seeded lettuce and salad mix. Early girl, better boy and cherry tomato. Oregano, chives, sage. Started green onios from seed and got onion and shallot sets started in small container. I started second 5 early girls yesterday. I got a sweet potato set in a small container. Most all is going into a raised bed, 3' by 6' by 12 inches deep. The bed is half filled and I should have it filled tomorrow. Ihave strawberry and 3 types of potato on order. The strawberry bed is a 3 by 6, 6 inches deep but it's not filled yet. I've got a sweet potato and 2 potato bins ready. They are 2' by 2'.

Got to start on the corn bed that will be 3x6 and a hoop cover for the 12 inch deep 3x6.

I haven't started on the containers for the peppers cucs and squash yet. Gonna wait a couple more weeks.

I started onions, leeks and shallots Feb 4 in 4x6 fiber pots. They all have 2-3 leaves now and I plant to move them up to individual cells.

I will be starting strawberries March 1 and eggplants, herbs, lettuce in mid-March. I won't be starting the toms until April 2. Lots of other veggies on the list to start between March 15 and April 22.

I don't plant out tender plants until the end of May even though our "usual" last frost date is May 15. As cold as this winter has been so far and with all the snow, I am going to play it safe.

I need to have a tree trimmed near the garden and hoping I can get all of the raised beds built by planting out time.

I've started purple kohlrabi, dragon purple carrots, iceberg lettuce, and leeks and/or cippolini onions from seed. I think I even have a couple little cabbage sprouts, if I haven't killed them by failing to pot them up. The kohlrabi is looking good, but the onions and carrots are in those tiny little plugs and don't seem to be doing that well. I think they're really meant just for seed starting. I can't start tomatoes until April 1st, because they get big in a hurry.

Hi You All:
First time gardener using seeds in doors prior tp transplanting. Here's a quick rundown on what I planted on February 24th:

30 Green Emerald Artichoke Seeds.
30 Large Bell Green Pepper Seeds.
30 Small Pickeled Cucumber Seeds.

In early April, I will start transplanting them following the frost cycle in my zone. Hopping for the best! I will keep you all posted on my success or failure.

Yesterday I started broccoli and kale!

As I look out the window at the entirely white, snow covered landscape, I am reminded that spring will come again.

To be a gardener is to believe in the future.

Too early to really start anything yet here, but I did start some determinate tomato seeds this week that I am planning on growing in pots instead of in the ground, so I figure that it won't hurt for them to be a month early. I am SO over winter... come on, spring!!

Yuppers! I've the onions, artichokes, parsley, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, a bazillion types of Asian greens, and an early radicchio up and running. Oh, and a couple peppers, but those were just a gemination test, the real sowing of those will be next week.

This week I mean to get the lettuce, more greens, and a variety of flowers going plus a couple of herbs, but I've run out of seed-starting medium. Peas are half in the ground. I mean, half the peas are all the way in the ground. ;)

I was talking to my Mom in Upstate NY where they just got 12 inches of snow, and I was just reassuring her that spring is indeed on the way. Fear not! Now I just need to pop over to the neighbors' place and get me some aged manure to till in real quick and we'll be plantin' before you know it!

I started lettuce, cabbage, chard and choy around February 10th. I sort of regret it... too early. Even though the temperatures are adequate inside my cold frame, the light levels and duration are not. Very, very slow growth. Still haven't invested in an indoor light setup so I really should have waited a month longer before growing outdoors in the cold frame.

it is way too early for radicchio, Sunni. Unless it is the grumolo variety.

Jealous eh? Well, here in Saskatoon, we recorded -35 F yesterday, no sign of getting over 0 F for a week from now and the ground is frozen 3 ft deep under 2 ft of snow. I haven't even started my cool season crops indoors, much less the warm season ones. My unheated greenhouse went down to +8 F. Still jealous? ;)

Too early for me. I'll wait until the end of March/early April. Last frost here is mid May. IF I had a greenhouse I'd start soon though.

aquawise you're not being very wise with several of yours. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and summer squash will all be a bust unless you have a greenhouse. I've still got almost 2 months to wait for those (longer for the squash and cucumbers).

No worries, I always read my cultural information! This variety was said to do well in Johnny's hot and cold weather trials and they recommend it for spring, summer and fall production. I'm pretty sure I would have to skip the summer production down here, since it's a tad warmer than in Maine. I would probably be starting some anyway, though, because I always trial cool weather crops in the spring even if they are meant for fall, just so I can see what they do, what the seedlings look like, and all that.

Im ohio also so its still early. I have onions, leeks and asparagus starting.

Zone 5 here. Have started onions from seed (red and yellow), shallots from seed, leeks from seed, parsley and peppers. Leeks and peppers just 2 days ago so not up yet. Mid month I'll be starting cole crops. Also have only 2 spinach plants started due to poor germination of last year's seed.

I have celery and onions going right now. I plan to start peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and leaf lettuce tomorrow.

Usually I just direct-sow green beans, corn, basil, cucumbers, peas, and of course - potatoes!

Zone 5 here in eastern Colorado. I've started indoors peppers, eggplants and leeks. In the cold frame I have peas, onion, radish, mesclun, cabbage and lettuce. Most of them are sprouting.

I've planted a bed of Alaska peas. If they get cold-stunted I might pull them out and replant different peas.

Onions and they are not doing worth a crap. I mixed seed starting mix and potting mix together. I think they are dying because of too dense soil. I would not suggest doing this. They are last years seed too boot. Bought new seed starting mix and put my first tomato seed in today. Hope this works.

I am in Ohio so it is really too early to start, but yes I started tomatoes and a variety of peppers. I held back half of my seeds though knowing it was early and I will be starting those later.
Some of the ones I already started will be in containers and I am hoping I will be able to maintain those in windows (or have an early spring!!!)or outside during the day and pull them in at night.

Also Coloradan, other side of town from Gjcore. Started mid-February: variety of flower seeds, basil, broccoli, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers. Once they grow too big for the light table, I run them outside in the morning and inside in the evening. I get plants as big as the little guys you would buy at the nursery and it's good entertainment during spring fever season. Everything else is direct sowed in mid-May, last official frost date.

I've started lettuce, spinach, broccoli. cauliflower, rutabagas, turnips, celery, and started artichokes and garlic in November.
Will be starting tomatoes and peppers in a few days. Waiting till late April to start cucumbers, vine peaches and squash.
I know I'm forgetting something. Went a little overboard on seeds this year.

i have started thousands (commercial grower) including direct seeding my first bed of greens/brassicas/root crops outside... definitely not too early for radiccio here in VA... looks like i have some that even managed to overwinter...

I'm in north east Alberta, -35 celcius this morning ,
so far have started onions,tomatoes,peppers, marigolds. petunias, geraniums,lobelia,impatiens,basil,parsley, cabbage, kale,pansy, ground cherry & strawberry

I have started a whole lot of things the past couple weeks and am currently sowing trays of tomatoes. Leeks, green onions, broccoli and some lettuces have already sprouted and have been left on the enclosed (but chilly) back porch in grow racks to get as much light as possible - these specimens can take some cold. Eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, and certain herbs are out there during the day (not sprouted yet) when the sun makes that porch warm, but in again at night. It can be a challenge getting enough light to all the new plants as they come charging through the seedstarting mix - let's hope the weather is favorable this Spring with lots of sunshine!
