How about leaving the bark out of the gritty mix?

I've been reading old threads to try to understand what the bark is for. Al, are you just using it as a filler because it is cheaper than the turface and granite? How would the mix behave differently if you left the bark out? It seems like the drainage/aeration qualities would be the same. My guess is that any nutrition coming from the bark is quite small compared to whatever fertilizer is used, but that's just a feeling.

Like many others here, I'm having trouble finding pine bark fines, and wondering if the plants would be any worse off in a gritty mix that is just turface and granite?
