Planting ' Double Row' Sweet Corn

I've grown sweet corn (mostly Peaches & Cream) for 4-5 seasons now and have yet to produce a decent crop(ears never have much girth). I've always planted 4-6, 30' rows, 2' apart with 8-10" between plants, well fertilized. The one thing I'd like to try, before I throw in the towel, is double row planting. anyone try this?
