How close can a southern magnolia be planted next to the house?
Comments (4)Magnolias are shallow-rooted and don't like to have their roots disturbed. If you for some reason feel you need to plant near the house, you will be taking many scores of square feet of area out of cultivation. And forget planting shrubs-groundcover underneath, as there will be almost no light striking the ground when mature. Which means moss, lichen, maybe even algae on your roof material, in addition to leaf litter, stamens, rotting flowers contributing goo. Which is never good. Comments (17)It is a common problem for underground storm drains (usually poorly engineered to begin with) to clog. I agree with Ken to abandon the underground portion and get the rainwater draining away from the house and yard on top of the ground. Also agree with him to cut the tree flush with grade. Paint the cut surface with undiluted herbicide to keep it from resprouting. Let it rot and forget about it. You will plant other things in different locations and the cut trunk will be covered up. It would be good to allow more space for plantings so they aren't so close to the house. Consider redoing the walk and pulling it farther away from house....See Moreshould we trim/chop this tree too close to the house siding
Comments (11)I find these comments about the proximity of trees to a house or other structure rather amusing :-) Most are triggered by gardeners living where large native trees do not heavily populate the landscape - including residential gardens - so the screams of alarm and panic are grossly overstated and verging on the ridiculous!! The "potential" of that puny little tree is nothing compared to the potential of 80'+ Douglas firs or 50' bigleaf maples that routinely populate landscapes here and often within very close proximity to houses or other structures. In 90% of the cases, it is just not a concern if the tree is healthy and well cared for....the exceptions are those with aggressive, water seeking roots. I'd likely remove the tree in question not because it poses any sort of threat - it doesn't - but because it is unattractive and already malpruned. Siting and proximity would not enter the equation!! btw, it does not look like any arborvitae I have ever seen either. It looks very definitively deciduous IMO....See MoreHelp please: are these trees too close to house foundation?
Comments (2)Even without the lines and pump concerns, they will get too big for where they are located. Replace them with something that won't outgrow the spot....See MoreFrankie_in_zone_7
