One more question regarding what to plant next to each other

I am in Missouri and I was wondering if there is some place to go, or a book to buy that would give me the best information on what grows really well here and also what are the best veggies to grow next to each other (or ones to stay away).

I would like to grow...

corn

watermelon

tomatoes

cucumber

peas

carrots

beans

potatoes

lettuce

that's all I can think of right now.

Gardenweb has a companion planting forum. I don't know how much traffic it gets, but it would be worth a try.

The University of Missouri Extension has many publications that are online. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page I linked below, there will be a list of publications having to do with vegetables. The first one, "Vegetable Planting Calendar" has links you can click on for each vegetable that will give growing information and suggested varieties. It says "the varieties listed below..." but they're actually on the left side of the page. There is also a map of Missouri with recommended planting dates. They have a lot of information. Hope it's helpful to you.

I guess I don't have much experience with conifers (just fruit trees) so spacing is always a big issue (lots of pruning in my yard). With most? conifers, you can really pack them in and still have huge specimens (one day!)...although shading is going to become a huge issue with other plants in the are (the reason I planted all my conifers on the north side of my property). The area we hiked is really neat. The pines block out the wind and its very quiet. In winter with a good snowcover, you can cross country ski or snowshoe through this area. It becomes so quiet. If you ever get a chance, southwest Wisconsin is pretty neat to explore in the fall. The glaciers spared us for the last million? years and water has done all the carving.

Thanks everyone. Kona seems to have been a strong bloomer since about Mid June. The only issue is its small and easily picked clean by two little ones who like to wear them behind their ear. So I was lucky to get outside and snap that picture first. I bought Gulfstream from the Staffords at a PSA sale a couple of years ago. He told me at the June sale the parent plant was lost this last winter when a greenhouse heater malfunctioned. The three other tips will have inflos too so it should be a nice show. Barb, I dont have the full sun space to grow seedlings without chopping down native Live Oaks. I have already cleared out Texas Persimmon, Crepe Myrtles, and Junipers to keep my grove in the sun. I even offered my neighbor to the west $200 to chop down a hackberry which would give my plants an extra two hours of late afternoon sun. I did find some seedlings popping up with Sariah's Curly Pink.

Pollination by the other grape didn't cause the change, though I don't know what did. A disease or bug that came with the new vine? Increased competition or shade or some other change in growing conditions? I imagine that there may be other possibilities as well.

Spacing is a bit tight, you might want to use a geneva double curtain or something similar to allow you to have more canes per vine to manage vigor. Also, research grape varieties. Sure those you listed are popular commercial varieties but they might need a lot of sprays or maintenance to get good fruit (no idea, would not survive in my zone). Also, there are so many super flavorful varieties that for one reason or other are not suitable for commercial growing but are awesome in a backyard. So far here in zone 4b I am LOVING Somerset as a early season seedless grape. Good luck.

Your question about what to plant with what hasn't been addressed yet, so the site that I use is given below. Apparently this isn't a site that buys into the notion that some plants benefit other plants. Only a few do if you examine the serious research. But the author lists whether specific plants do well either planted with other specific plants or in last year's spot where those other plants grew.

One of the primary reasons there are "bad" companions is because some soil diseases are shared so you don't want more infections than might already occur. Potatoes and tomatoes come to mind. Or they may be attractive to the same insect pests and you'll be overrun with them. Another reason something may be a bad companion is that it may overwhelm a particular plant next to it. Or the root structures may not be compatible for sharing adjacent spaces.

Anyway, this is what I use, and I'm happy with it!

As for me if you have a large enough Corn field I would plant my watermelon, cucumbers and beans there Have had very good luck using the corn as as cover or something to climb.
