Sick of stella d'oros need new daylily (or lily)

Hello,

I have TONS of stella d'oro lilies in my perennial beds but they're beginning to get a little too numerous. I'd also like to have something that isn't yellow! lol. Anyways, I REALLY don't want to get wrapped up in collecting every possible daylily cultivar there is, but if someone has an idea for a different cultivar could you share your thoughts?? Again, I DON'T need to know about every single cultivar ther is (I'm sure there's billions of them lol) I just want something nice that isn't stella d'oros.

I was interested in you Witchhazel, but was waiting on you to come up with a trade? I'd like some stellas and could offer you some others too. I can make a list of my extra daylily. Interested? Take a look at my exchange list.

I have a red daylily maybe it is more of a crimson. and a peach or coral with a red center. not sure what kind there are. I did buy from a lily enthusiast thinning out her garden.. I do have pictures if you want to see them. please email me if you would like to trade. I am up for anything.

OK, I can think of a scenario or two... Do you happen to grow liarope nearby? If so, that's your runner... they look just like daylilies at the start. If not, I'm betting the "runners" are actually plants from seed. If you don't discard the seed pods, you run the risk of starting new plants. If you don't want new plants, as soon as all blooms are spent, prune the scape down to the ground. I have liarope near daylilies in my front garden. Yesterday I saw a daylily seeding with a scape on it about a foot from the mother plant. Last week, with no scape, I would have sworn it was liarope.

Yes, they'd be fine. I don't think anyone has ever managed to kill a Stella d'Oro. They're really a work horse plant. I'd opt for a sharp spade since you will have to dig down (at least 6 inches) and under a bit. I'm just not sure a sharp knife would slice through the clumps so a piece could be lifted, but a pruning saw would work. Stellas grow so quickly, in a couple of seasons you'd have your own good sized clump to divide. I have to divide mine every two years - they get the size of a bushel basket. As to whether or not these mown down plants are for the taking, I can't say - perhaps the block has a new not so skilled maintenance person or the planting scheme is to be changed anyway.
