Please forgive my lame beginner questions

When we used to garden in Canada everything was planted as a seed (except) potatoes right in the garden. Course we couldn't do this til the end of May or early June.

Anyways, I'm very unfamiliar with starting plants from seeds indoors. Do I need to do this to have a successful garden? Unfortunately I do not have a very bright house.

or Can I just plant the seeds in the garden like I used to. I know I can do this with carrots, etc. Plants like tomatoes, I'll get from the nursery.

Also....has anyone grown spaghetti squash with success here?

Not lame questions at all! You will have a great garden, using your experience from Canada, and learning about a zone 6 garden.
Plants to start indoors (and for your area, now is good); peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.
Direct seed spinach, lettuce, all root crops, cucumbers (although some folks start these indoors and transplant, but I find that the transplant shock sets them back and they do no better than the direct seeded cukes), melons and squash, corn, and beans. Did I miss anything?
Spaghetti squash is a great fun veggie--we have had it in our garden and it does well. However, it does NOT freeze well! Sad experience with that . . . .
If you have an agricultural extension office in your county, the agent will have a list of recommended varieties for your area, and probably also a recommended planting date.

Hi luvbrugs, Don't be scared ! Little needle stick. They will teach you @ the clinic how to do it. The question about it causing cancer you should talk to the clinic about that before you do anything. ALWAYS ask questions !! They are there to help. I'm sure thay will answer all your questions. for whatever its worth... i am a novice gardener. bought a good sized (10-12 inches tall of plant) organic basil plant from whole foods at some point last fall or winter. big enough to cost seventeen bucks. i have treated it horribly. underwatering...i am truly surprised it is still alive. it in fact has tried to flower. now it is leggy as all get out, and rather unattractive, but by golly it produces enough leaves to use a lot in at least one recipe per week, or a lil in 4-5 salads per week. fish fert. all og. i dont even clean the leaves sometimes. i did let it sit in a rusty pan sometimes, but i do not rec this, im sure i ate some sort of lead or something prolly. i live in an old house that has a window jutting out. it likes that place. water it from the bottom. get it a bigger pot. dont expect much. see what happens. maybe start w a bigger plant imo. have fun =) good fert, water right...i see no reason you wont get something to harvest. now a good tip would be to always taste the basil/herbs at the store BEFORE you buy. omg some of them are just awful lol

One more question: DH and I are disagreeing over the windowsill! Would it be better for him to build a wood ledge for the windowsill and tile over it, or should we buy a wooden windowsill more like this (http://www.onewomanslife.com/home/uploaded_images/kitwindowduring-749696.jpg), paint it white, and tile around it? I think he is thinking he will tile the windowsill and keep it going all the way up around the window. I'm having a hard time imagining this and think it might be better to texture and paint around the window, put an actual windowsill in, paint it the same color as the cabs, and tile just the backsplash, keeping a straight line across. I don't know...maybe we'd have to decide on what we're doing with the tile before we make this decision. This is crazy! LOL

Well it all depends, what zone are you growing in?

If you are purchasing warm season crops like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant etc then you really should not have to start anything indoors.

As for the squash, they like warm soil. They should not be planted until the soil is nice and warm and there is no risk of any cold weather rolling in.
