strange new growth on strawberry plant

I have been growing a strawberry plant in a small container for a couple years now and this season decided to give it a little more room to stretch out (ie. larger container). It now has 3 large stalks growing off to one side of the original plant. The stalks are maybe an inch thick and over a foot high. At first I though they were runners, now i'm just scratching my head because they seem unusually large. Any ideas? I have a photo but don't know how to post it. thanks!

I'm really sratching my head on this one. A photo would be great. For posting pictures what I do is use photobucket.com, upload the picture to photobucket and copy and paste the HTML code (this option appears when you hover over the actual picture) on to the thread. Good luck.

pictures. you have freak abomination strawberries :) , or another plant growing up nearby maybe? I'd like to see.

It's a weed and nothing to do with the strawberry. There is no disease or genetic aberration which could change the appearance of the strawberry so dramatically. If you follow the strawberry plant down to the soil with the fingers of one hand then hold it firmly in position then follow the other plant to the ground with the other hand, grasp and pull, the weed should come out. If the strawberry is dislodged to just shove it back and firm the soil around it. Alternatively dig up the strawberry, pull away the weed and replant the strawberry. Either way it's no big deal. Fire would kill both plants.

Mine are doing the same thing by design. I wanted bloom now in order to get early fruit next spring. This is in a greenhouse where it won't freeze. I forced flowers by pruning. It looks like you pruned recently. It won't affect next yrs production significantly even if your early flowers freeze. Protect the flowers from freezing and you might have some early fruit. Houston doesn't freeze that often and they'll survive a light freeze down to about 28F. You'll find unusually large berries if some survive. Hi Carolyn, yes, I bought the plant in bloom! I'm going to try to pull the plant out of the pot, see if it's actually a part of the phrag plant. I took a pic, I'll have to see if I can post it in the gallery, first tomorrow though. sheila

homernoy, Thanks so much for passing this along. As someone else has pointed out, you just may very well have provided info that will help someone to save a sick palm tree or two. The link was good too.....lots of pictures. Amazing the amount of damage a simple boron deficiency can cause. But what a surprise at the end of the article. They recommend using Borax to help remedy the problem? Is this the same 20-Mule Team Borax laundry booster that's been around for years? Surely there are better sources. I wonder now if Miracle-Gro, Peters and other big name fertilizers contain boron as a trace element?

The planter is about 15" wide. I just measure the 3 main stalks they are about .5-.75" thick and the leaves up top are starting to look like normal strawberry leaves just bigger!

I dont think those are strawberries growing vertically. What they are I dont know, I'm at a loss here. Do you have another picture of the top growth?

Those darn squirrels/chipmunks ..... always burying sunflower seeds in our pots.

Those look just like the sunflowers my son has growing. :)

We don't have critters helping, he planted them. ;)

Crazy! While i enjoy being informed, i'm slightly disappointed i don't have the worlds largest strawberries. Are they ok growing together? Should I transplant the sunflowers into another planter?

I'm afraid they won't be able to live together much longer.
A sunflower will reach anywhere from 4-10' tall! the seed heads are very heavy, and the root system, very large. That pot will not hold them.

One good wind, and it will rip them out and your strawberry with them.

I don't know how well they will transplant, but it's worth a shot.

I would definitely get rid of them or transplant. Sunflower seeds are plentiful & cheap. ;o)
