Comments (3)Cover your eggplant with row covers and keep them covered until they start to bloom. Then you have to uncover them for pollination, but at that point the leaves are MUCH less appealing to the flea beetle....See MoreBugs eating eggplant leaves
Comments (1)Hi Cole. Since you have straw under them, I would guess pill bugs. They feast at night. Pull the straw back and you would probably see them since they hide during the day. I have a big problem with them on my seedlings. You could lay pieces of boards near them and they will hide and you can manually dispose of them. I let my chickens in my beds before planting that seems to help....See MoreCurling Leaves on Eggplant?
Comments (6)kirchren, Since the newer leaves seem to be affected and the plant is growing in a pot, I suspect a nutrient deficiency. My guess is a calcium deficiency, since plants need a lot of calcium and it moves very slowly in the plant. I would sprinkle a small amount of gypsum and/or lawn lime (calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate) on the surface of the medium. Be very careful not to overdo the lawn lime, because it is alkaline. But the lawn lime has the advantage of also supplying magnesium. If there is plenty of calcium in the soil, the problem will gradually correct itself. The process is gradual because calcium moves so slowly in the plant. If you are in a hurry to correct the problem, you could use a foliar spray of dilute calcium nitrate. I include calcium nitrate in my feedings of soluble nutrients as a preventive measure. A pound of calcium nitrate lasts me a long time, because I dilute it to 1/2 teaspoon per gallon. You could water your pot with some diluted calcium nitrate instead of applying gypsum or lawn lime. Comments (10)The issue isn't how often you water. As is often said here - watering isn't something you schedule. The plants dictate when and how you water, not some artificial schedule. As with all watering of contained plants the issue is the consistency (or lack of it) in the soil moisture level. Edema results from amounts of water at any one time. Inconsistent watering - overly dry periods followed by excessively wet episodes. Ambient humidity, air circulation, and air temp also affect how well the plants leaves are able to transpire, to give off excess moisture, to prevent edema, With higher humidity, stagnant air, and cooler temps transpiration is limited and the excess water is stored in leaf tissue cells causing edema.
