HAVE: Salal Plants and Huckleberry cuttings.

I have these for anyone interested in a good trade, or with cuttings of their own to send of some other plant.

Salal is a wonderful shade perrenial that has berries that were highly valued by natives as a diet staple in the pacific northwest. Can send many rooted plants, grow well to fill out an area.

Evergreen huckleberry grows well in this area. This berry plant is the best choice for fruit production in shade. This (and salal) can both be grown in full sun - but grow larger in shady conditions. I can trade either cuttings of evergreen huckleberry or whole plants.

I would love to have both of these plants, huckleberry and salal. I have to research salal since I've never heard of it, but it sounds like I'd like to grow it with the berries, and I have shade at the edge of my yard. I'd also be interested in some of your trillium tubers for shade. Right off the top, I noticed you wanted hostas and woodland plants. I've got some hostas (plain green leaves, white flowers probably fragrant) and I have toadlily (tricyrtis) seeds I harvested this yr. I have forsythia cuttings, too. I'll send you an email when I have some more time later tonight, and think about what else I can send. Sounds like you have a great offer, and will probably get lots of response here.

Interesting question. I am no expert in huckleberry cultivation, but I do know that they like moist, acidic soil with a lot of organic matter and dead wood -- the exact type of conditions you find in an undisturbed forest area. I think you'd have a lot of trouble "transplanting" something used to those conditions into your typical back yard. Also, I imagine those bushes could be very old, and it would be impossible (and maybe illegal) to dig them up. Huckleberries aren't very commonly sold for cultivation in our area, and I think they are rather hard to grow. So even if you were willing to buy a plant, it might be something of a project. Does HD even sell them? Maybe your grandmother could show you where her special bushes are, and you could pick them for her. (Or, if you don't want to, I will!) It's also worth considering that quite possibly a large part of her pleasure in the berries has to do precisely with going into the deep forest and picking them. I also love to pick wild berries, and I find it much more gratifying than going to a farm and picking off cultivated plants. Perhaps having her special spot in the forest and being out in nature is the true pleasure? Anyway, I hope someone else more knowledgeable than I comes along with more optimistic advice.

Local plants often seen beneath Douglas firs in nature, on same sandy or dryish soils that tend to be dominated by salal - a frequent competitor in local patches, where it's usual to see a relatively small number of huckleberry bushes scattered among extensive growths of salal. Soil: Salal grows on a variety of mineral and organic substrates including shallow rocky soils, sand dunes, coarse alluvium, glacial till, and peat [45,56]. Growth is generally best on moist sandy or peaty soils where salal occurs as a vigorous upright shrub [45]. Salal grows on nutrient poor to moderately rich soils [45,79]. On shallow, droughty soils, plants may assume a matlike growth form. Salal commonly grows on decaying wood and stumps and can grow as an epiphyte on living trees in extremely humid areas [45]. Yes, salal normally grows in a wide variety of environments, from deep shade (always from conifers in the wild) to full sun, and summer-dry soil to soil that never is all that dry. In sun or in dry soil it tends to be shorter than otherwise. Sometimes a stand will have a lot of leaf spot, while other stands are clean. I don't think your salal being under conifers (I presume you mean conifers when you say evergreens) has much if anything to do with the leaf spotting. Spotting may be worse this year than others due to the cold wet springs two years in a row,, and last year's total lack of a dry summer, which most fungi love. But maybe yours is spotted every year regardless. My salal, what little I have here, is under a mixed bag of conifers, madrones and maples, never ever gets watered, and some has spots and some doesn't. I have to look to find clean stuff for flower arrangements but I always can find something clean. 8ft tall is pretty tall. You might try, as suggested above, to cut some of it down shorter, and see if the new growth comes out clean. It might need some rejuvenation. If that works and you cut some back every year then you'll reduce the amount of leaf spotting without having to cut it all back at once. Don't try irrigating or fertilizing it, that's totally unnecessary for salal, and the extra nitrogen and water on leaves might make the spotting worse. If it's 8ft tall it's a pretty old, well-established stand. My salal might be about 40 years old and it's only 2-3 feet tall. It is a fantastic habitat for attracting birds, isn't it? the towhees and sparrows love it.

Just wanted to say YES, i still have lots of salal plants and huckleberry cuttings left. For rooted huckleberry plants, I will be looking for a good trade though, as these are somewhat more scarce. Please email me with things you want from my list. I will repost if I run out of these plants, so if the listing is up and not amended; I still have plants to trade for you now, today, give me a call!

I especially am looking for fig cuttings, bamboo offsets, mulberry cuttings, raspberry divisions and grape cuttings.

I am VERY interested in your evergreen huckleberry plants if you still have any. I can offer you hellebores, cast-iron plants and anything off my trade list. Will also have black walnut seedlings as soon as they leaf out, also have cuttings and nuts. I also have a HUGE fuzzy Kiwi plant that is hardy to at least 10F that I can take cuttings from. do you have instructions on how to propagate wild hucklerry? i've just posted on another forum and came across yours saying you have hucklerry cuttings. i have nothing to trade (alas) as i'm just getting started but i have access to wild hucklerry which i'd like to transplant onto my property. any suggestions or tips? thanks.

I would love to have some of your Salal and the Evergreen Huckleberry as well and would be more than happy to pay the postage. I am new to gardening and have a large open rocky area with terrific filtered light where I currently have Oregon Grape growing like crazy. These two other plants would make for some terrific jams and jellies and would be great for the wildlife.
