Will have Rare, Hard to find Pacific Coast Native Iris Hybrids available to trade in Feb & March & possibly early April, depending on weather. These Iris can only be dug and transplanted during these times and are only hardy in part of zone 6 through zone 9, doing best in zones 7 & 8. These are reselect seedlings from named varieties of the famous Iris hybridizer, Joe Ghio, as well as some crossed with Iris tenax, to give them increased hardiness. Hi Nancy, yes the PCI are a little different from others. It goes dormant in the summer. If you divide them when they are dormant they die. Spring and fall when they are actively growing is the best time. You will see new white shoots on their roots. I usually divide mine late September or early October. The first year or 2 when you are getting a plant established it needs extra water. After that they are very drought tolerant. That is one of the reasons I started to grow them. I get tired of watering in our dry summers. Karen

Growing PCIs from seed is your best bet if you don't live on the weest coast. They are picky little plants and often can be difficult to grow outside their native climate. Certainly intercross your seedlings - the original parent's colors should pop up in the mix. Depending on how much of a hybrid the parent was you might get a wide range of colors. One of the regulars at the iris forum is an expert PCI hybridizer in Australia. I am sure she will have more info for you. MIke
