Osmocote plus has CFR minors
Comments (16)After getting with a scotts helpline supervisor I am told that the 50lb pro formula and the 4.5 lb orange label osmocote plus have different inert ingredients and is not and for the time being will not have any container dosage suggestions. I am using the 19-6-12 straight osmocote suggestions for my experiments and that is all I can say for now. I will share what I learn throughout the growing season and see how it all goes. I am for now going to back off on suggesting it used in any manner other than the labeled until more info becomes available or you wish to test it at your own risk as I am doing. Filix: I don't know if it is a silver bullet or not? It just seems logical to offer a product such as this for consumers but there may be safety and legal issues that need to be addressed before this can come about. I do know there is an incredible amount of legal requirements to getting anything on a label that might be used for food or be around children or pets and maybe this is where the main issue is but on that I can only make a guess as to why this has not and as of yet is not available by label to use for containers. I just know that is where it is at at this point in time. Happy Growing All and please accept my apology for getting anyone's hopes up prematurely. David...See Morethe NEW Osmocote Plus - its back(?)
Comments (11)Lucky you! I was able to stock up on the stuff last summer but ran out at the end of the season. The dose is just what is in Al's original 5-1-1 recipe: 1 tablespoon per gallon of finished mix. Note that that is basically a maintenance dose and assumes that you will be adding soluble fertilizers during growth. If you do not plan to do that, I think you could add 1.5 tablespoons per gallon. Also note that Osmocote Plus is supposed to last 6 months, but it will not last that long at higher temperatures, so you may need to add more fertilizer about four months down the line. There was a detailed discussion about this some time ago which you could search for if you want to fine tune everything. I made a note that Nil13 said: "For containers, I use 1 pound of nitrogen per cubic yard of potting soil which works out to about 2.2 grams of nitrogen per gallon of potting soil. The numbers 15-8-20 refer to percentage of nitrogen-P2O5-K2O. So a 100 pound bag of that fertilizer will contain 15 pounds of nitrogen." To me, a few grams more or less doesn't make a significant difference....See MoreIssues with Al's 5-1-1 mix
Comments (29)5:1:1 would be like a good computer motherboard, a skillful person can unlock the potential of a good motherboard. When I started learning assembled computer and overclocking I destroyed a lot of motherboards, I was not able to use the full potential of the motherboard because I was an inexperienced beginner. I spent a lot of time and money and finally somewhat I am able to do what I'd like to do with my machine, that's I enjoy now :-). So if you have skill may be you can unlock the potential of your plants, it is up to your skill of container gardening. Overclocked CPU are void warrantee we know that but to use the full potential of the machine we use a lot of difference means and methods. Just like adding lime, slow release fertilizer ....whatever you called to 5:1:1. The time changed the means and methods of overclocking as well as 5:1:1 won't remain just like the time it has been created, I think. It should be changed according to the climatic condition and the growing environment and the type of plants we grow. To unlock the potential of container plants, 5:1:1 has been created and then started to tweak it to make it works it is natural for those people who loves it, just like overclocking. One of our forum members TheMasterGardener gave his opinion last year about 5:1:1 I consider he is right. I know very well how many of our active forum members support this 5:1:1. As a hobby container gardener I have been trying to get some useful information from the different opinions to grow my plants better :-). too bad very selfish :-). I do not know how bad are those potting soil available in the markets over there but the potting soil we have here is very much acceptable. Before I am here I used it without much problems. The problems we have here is mainly cold climate and sunshine. I have been in so many different forums only here 5:1:1 is keep doing discussion so there must be a good reason, I think. The issues with Al's 5-1-1 mix should be solved by your skillful application of the advice you got here. Please do not be serious, just I share my opinion. I encourage whoever likes to try new things. Good luck Caelian...See Moreusing osmocote plus, still need gypsum?
Comments (3)I would still add it, yes. The fertilizer you mentioned has an upside down Ca:Mg ratio. You should be supplying 2-5 times as much Ca as Mg. Al...See Morequeensinfo
