'Staging' your plantings - how do you do it for containers?

I've become very engaged by container planting - I have a large patio and a small yard, and the limited garden space is largely devoted to vegetables and roses. I also very much like the "technical" aspects of container gardening (like the soil science aspects of "regular" gardening).

I bought two nice SWCs from Gardeners for my front stoop and had great plans to grow some canna in them as a summer-long decorative planting - I planned to add some filler/spiller/thriller as needed.

I bought the canna rather late and just this weekend filled up my big, pretty planters with Al's mix and planted the canna rhizomes (or whatever they are). I then stood back and looked at the plantless containers and thought "that's dumb", dug out the rhizomes and put them into some 1 gallon pots from the nursery and put them in my warm boiler room to start.

Rather a long way to say, how do you "stage" your plants in decorative containers? I already succession-plant my vegetable garden (I always have something growing under lights in the boiler room) - early season spinach/peas/lettuce replaced by mid and late season flowers and vegetables. By the same logic, I'm content to have containers on the back patio in various states of bloom, but there are a few locations I would like to have a continuous "decorative" display.

Do people do the same for containers? Do you just go to the nursery and buy fresh stuff or do are you constantly cultivating something new to plant? Do you cycle your decorative planters in and out of their primary locations as they come into and go out of peak display?

Any approaches (plants/techniques) to this that work well? Anything you wouldn't consider for "staging" because it doesn't transplant well or for other reasons? Am I going to kill my cannas doing this?

I have a lot of perennials and usually let them have the pot to themselves.
The annuals - it depends on the plants. Tall ones (marigolds, zinnias, cosmos, etc) I usually plant a bunch of each in their own container along the fence.
If I do mixed plantings, I use the "Thriller-Filler-Spiller" format.
The "Thriller would be the tallest plant - like the canna, dracena spikes, etc. The Filler would be a shorter, bushier plat - like osteospernum, dwarf marigolds, just about anything that grows about 6-8 inches tall. The Spillers are the trailing plants - Sweet potato vine, million bells, petunias are googd (I don't use them 'cuz I don't care for them).

I don't do a lot of moving around. I have over 100 pots and it's just too much of a bother to do all that.
I'm LAZY! LOL!
Most of the plants I choose bloom all summer anyway so it's all good.

Very interesting question.

I am currently experimenting with different combinations in containers to achieve a variety of effects. In most cases, I do not use annuals. While I am a little vague on your exact definition of "staging", I think I may have an idea. Following are examples of my idea of "staging".

I like Hostas in containers. But when they die down in fall, it leaves a blank spot. So, I will try this year to interplant with some Arum species/varieties. In my climate, the Arum will be sending out new leaves about the time that the Hosta disappear. Result: No blank spots, similar cultural/light/water requirements, and similar leaf sizes and textures.

If you like Canna, you may be trying some of the smaller varieties in pots. The flowers and foliage are great. But in winter, all is gone. How about interplanting those cannas with Aspidistra elatior, or something like it? You'll still have foliage (but no flowers) when the cannas go away. The problem with this may be too much sun on the Aspidistra, but if you plant enough cannas, they may be shaded out enough to not be damaged by sun.

In my zone, I can get a continuous display of flowers (even some during the winter, in certain microclimates), with varying combinations of Pelargonium, perennial Dianthus', Gazania, Gaillardia, for instance.

I usually plant my containers with 3 or 5 different species (always an odd number; kind of a zen thing), and I don't always worry about having flowers. I do want, however, to have at least one eye-catching evergreen foliage plant to keep the container interesting year-round when there are no flowers. Some of my foliage plants (some with, some without flowers) include: Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web' and solid green, various Heuchera, Euonymus japonica and E. fortunei variegated forms, small-leafed variegated and solid green Hedera, Aspidistra elatior, Abutilon species and hybrids, variegated and solid green Ophiopogon, various ferns, and on and on.

Very good points, none of which I even thought of. I certainly don't want a hydrophobic mix and the fact that a wet soil mix keeps roots cooler than a dry mix definitely makes sense, especially since not only are these containers fabric pots, but they get direct sun all day long as well as the reflected heat off the side of my garage. Last year the tomatoes next to my garage grew 8 feet tall (in a 50/50 mix of compost and ProMix BX) which was a first ever for me. Everything is different this year (or so I would think) because I'm using 5-1-1 instead of a soil mix. You've convinced me to water uniformly and will do so effective .....right.....now. Now the next question would be....assuming worst case scenarios...intense summer heat and humidity and very little rain (all of which are usually a given in NJ) HOW MUCH water should I expect to add to each container with each watering and how frequently? Does 1 gallon in a 20 gallon container every other day sound like too much? Or rather than measuring (I tend to over-complicate things like this) should I just stick a garden hose in there and water the surface (under low pressure) until it reaches the lip of the container? The 5-1-1 mix is about 3 inches from the top of each container. Doing it this way will ensure that water drains more uniformly throughout the container (assuming they are all level). Does the fact that I have fabric pots substantially reduce the possibility that I could end up overwatering? Does anyone use any special garden hose nozzle that produces a gentle stream of water under very low pressure?

I have always taped all the way around the jug. This year I decided to lighten up a little and just put a couple of tabs of tape. I hear others talking about how it works fine. I've already discovered it's not going to work for me here. You see, I live in Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plain. The constant onslaught of dry wind is making it difficult to keep my containers hydrated and it's only February. Taping all around is on the to do list today. If you live where horrid wind comes and goes, you probably don't need to tape. If you live in an aerodynamic testing chamber where the tests never end, you should probably tape.

Hi Gayle - thanks for your thoughts. :-) I'm a "less steps" person, so I really need solutions that don't require taking trash or anything from one room to the other...ie, bathroom stuff stays in the bathroom until it goes outside, kitchen stuff stays in the kitchen until it's disposed of, etc. I do need those visual reminders out and "in my face", or I forget. Too much other stuff going on, I guess. I want my compost crock on the counter so the stuff in there *can* start to rot/mold before it goes out...it will be better food for the worms that way. So I did buy a crock with a filter in the lid that will look nice on my counter, because I want the compost materials sitting out (I would have had to buy something anyways...we don't drink coffee here, and don't buy anything that comes in a plastic container large enough to make a good compost collection bucket). If I don't see it, I won't use it, with the exception of the metal and plastic collection cans under the sink (because they'll be right by the garbage can, so if I go to instinctually throw something away, those bins will be right there. I put all food scraps down the disposal now, so the crock will remind me not to do that anymore. :-) Stuff that can't be composted in the bathroom includes toilet paper wrappings (the plastic outter wrap), bandaids, gum, q-tips (plastic "stick" - we'll buy differently next time), cotton ball bags, used razor blades, nail polish bottles (no glass recycling here), and items used to remove nail polish (sponges rife with nail polish remover...don't want that in my compost). And yes, I really am too lazy to carry that stuff all the way to the kitchen garbage - less steps equals less time spent shuttling "stuff" through the house. I'm all about making things as easy on myself and efficient as possible. :-) My magazines and "leftover" paper will be recycled, but a lot will be shredded for the compost pile. I have that pretty much figured out though - a box in a kitchen cabinet right under where we go through the mail. I will be emptying it regularly though...I have a different box for papers "to be filed" or that I might need. I'm a catalog junkie - and we do get a lot of junk mail, plus the paper daily. I'll probably need to do two paper boxes...one for the compost, and one for the recycling, so I can add the paperboard to the compost box (our recyclers don't take paperboard). All paperboard boxes (like the ones we get holding cases of cans from Costco) will be broken down and composted, so that's no big deal. I don't buy much processed foods either - but the costco canned fruits/veg all come in paperboard. I think I'll just get a smaller trash can for the bathroom to label "compostables" for the bathroom counter (there's a good spot for it right under the medicine cabinet), and then two more bins for under the kitchen sink for collecting cans and plastics, respectively. That should take care of it, I think...won't know until I try it for awhile. It's a lot to get used to - not throwing out a lot of stuff that we normally would, but infrastructure makes all the difference for me with new habits, so I just want to make sure I have a good basis to work from. :-) Does anyone out there have those triangular bins that fit four in a square, and pull out from a kitchen cabinet? I've been thinking that might be a good way to organize my collection bins under the sink...

How do you keep a tomato plant in vegetation stage?

This may shock sey, but I agree with what he said above. There are two cycles in the life cycle of a tomato plant. The first is the vegetative one where there is growth of roots and stems and foliage. I think that most of you know that small transplants can and do form buds and blossoms, the sexual cycle, and that means that the energy compounds made from photsynthesis are diverted to the sexual cycle, albeit prematurely. And that's why many growers take the buds and blossoms off those young plants as I usually did when I was setting out transplants. Most tomato growers want to keep the plants in the vegetative cycle until the plants are much larger. The blossom cycle itself is about 2-3 weeks so after removing any early buds and blossoms the plants will then form new buds and blossoms and at that point leave them on the plant. From then on of course the plants continue to get larger and larger as well as more buds and blossoms and the then more buds and blossoms and fruit set and fruit maturation, but with more foliage there's more photosynthesis thus more ATP, GTP, etc. to do both at the same time as sey mentioned. So yes, one can keep a plant in the initial vegetative cycle by over fertilizing it and/or growing plants in overly rich soil since that keeps plants in that initial vegetative cycle without going into the sexual cycle. I once was living in a small apt in a house that was owned by two brothers. I wanted so much to grow some tomato plants but the only place available was a small strip behind the garage and they said that was OK. I had to buy some plants, not a problem, set them back there and waited. They sat there and sat there and didn't grow, actually hardly any sun and overhanging branches from the yard of the folks who lived in back. Being now desperate, I fertilized them like no tomorrow and ended up with huge plants that were best used as shubbery, with never a bud or blossom to be seen.<G> And I should have known better since I'm the one who grew up on what we call a truck farm here in the East where we grew many different kinds of crops, and many acres of tomatoes and by age 5 was sitting on the seat atop the water tank of the plant setter and not that soon after that was riding the plant setter with her Aunt Olive and not soon after that was picking tomatoes, and they were 3 peck heavy bushels, but dad would carry them out to the dirt roadway and then come along later with that two wheeled cart, take them back to the big shed where we would then sort and pack them and load the truck to take them to market the next morning, and the gates to that market opened at 5AM when there was a mad dash of all the trucks to get to coveted spots in the long covered stall where the commercial buyers would walk down the aisle making decisions on which farmers' produce the wanted to buy. I only buy new plants mid-season if something happened that killed off something in its own pot. Usually annuals. This only happened to me once or twice in 10 years.
I tend to buy perennials that bloom through the season.
For example- last year, this Phlox started blooming at the end of June and went non-stop until the 2nd week of Sept.

I don't obsess about it - I just sit back and enjoy it.

I'm in 10 florida so all the rules are different. IMUST stage all the plantings because temperates will not grow in summer and tropicals get nipped on occasion.in winter.
Have a small lot and the soil is about 80 percent sand and 20 percent seashells.lol Even the weeds struggle .Grow mostly in pots also because I grow a lot of winter dormant and summer dormants a lot of dwarfed tropical trees and keep most of the epiphytes in the shadehouse along with the very touchy understory palms. I also keep 3 water gardens and an aviary so planting schemes last about 3 weeks tops. lol
Cannas will grow year around here and flower 10 months depending on the weather. The worst problem is "leaf rollers" part of which I grow as water plants and part wet terrests. Eventually all get so ratty looking I usually cut them to the ground or those in pots I cut and repot. Heliconias are a better choice for me as they are immune to the leaf rollers but are very cold sensitive,
I try to plan on a "cold winter " and "mild winter" as well as a Dry summer or wet summer plan. So no matter what happens something is doing well .lol.
I would have to agree with the others Sit back and experiment and most of all enjoy it!! gary

OOS - it's cool to find someone else interested in gardening in So. Westchester. I find remarkably few people garden in the area. What's your favorite nursery around here? I like Nabel's in Mamaroneck.

Putting plants together in a container is like flower arranging with a moving target - how can I economically and easily keep a series of mixed containers in continuous display? Maybe I'm over-thinking this (it wouldn't be the first time), but I practice intensive cultivation on my vegetable beds, why not in my containers? My interest in mixing annuals and perennials is in part because I bought a bunch of dwarf bulbs on sale and need to justify it to my wife ("it's an investment, sweetheart!") and because I enjoy seed starting annuals and need a new project once everything's planted in the veg garden.

Redneck and Gary, I think what you do is closer to my goals than the style OOS uses, since I'm interested in a mix of plants in a series of larger planters (although OOS's backyard filled with a variety of individual containers is maybe the same thing on a larger scale). But you're both from more temperate zones - I don't even think about winter for my outdoor containers (although maybe I can overwinter some ivies and such in the house). I love the idea Redneck proposes of using ferns (I love ferns but haven't ever grown them), but most of my containers are in full sun so they would probably bake. BTW, yes, they are dwarf cannas.

I guess utlimately what the original post was trying to ask is whether the best way to maintain a larger mixed container is to plant it up all in one go with enough foresight that it looks good for 4-6 months or whether you should constantly be moving new plants in and out as I do in my veg beds. And if you're going to move new plants in and out, do you start in a series of smaller containers and move them to new containers when they're at their peak? With either approach, what plants work well?

It's interesting that everyone named perennials for the most part - I had envisioned more reliance on annuals. I'm going to follow up with a separate post asking for ideas for good container annuals started from seed...

There are some ferns that will tolerate more sun than others. And indeed there are some that will even tolerate drought once established. Ferns of one sort or another can be used is most climate zones.

I'm no fern expert; perhaps ask around the FERNS forum for some ideas.

Hey, Mark-
My garden has always been my "escape" after a day's work. I retired last Aug, so this will be my first year where I can totally enjoy my garden for the entire season. Even then, I'm going to be starting late. I'm going on vacation the last week in May. That's when I usually had everything done. I won't be purchasing any annuals until I return (1st week of June) I'm a bit bummed about it, but I can't do anything about it since I'm not the one who scheduled the trip.

Anyway - I usually like to try something new every year. I have done cantaloupe, pumpkins, gourds and eggplant -which, BTW, I don't even LIKE! But they look cool! LOL!

As for nurseries - I usually go to the ones on the west side of the county, since that's where I am. I've been to Nabel's but it's not that convienent for me.
I have shopped at Tony's (Larchmont, I think) - usually on a Sunday coming from church (in the Bronx).
My favorite is Green Valley in Hawthorne (Rt9) and Sprainbrook Nursery.
Rosedale Garden Center is nice - but pricey. I only buy a couple of things there that I usually don't see in the other places.
I was planning to try Winter Sowing this year but when the trip came up, I put that on the back burner.
I have to rely on Mother Nature to sustain the perennials while I'm gone.

I don't move the plants to bigger containers during the season. I just let them grow were they are.
Even my perennials, when they start getting too crowded in the pot they're in - I just divide them, put part back in their same container and put the other in a new pot of the same size. This is how I ended up with more than 150 pots. LOL!

BTW- There's a plant sale at the Native Plant Center on Saturday, May 3rd. They are located on the campus of WCC in Valhalla. I have some items pre-ordered for pick up next week, but I'll probably go on the 26th to see if there's anything else I might like.
The plants they offer are all native to our area/zone.
