Overgrown yews in front of house

We built our home almost 30 years ago and planted yew bushes in front of it. Now these shrubs, which were supposed to be a dwarf variety, have become very overgrown despite pruning. Also, the deer have had several meals at our expense. Personally, I would love to tear them out but I don't know what to plant in their place. We live in northern CT in zone 5 and the house faces West so it gets a lot of sun. I have attached a photo of the left side of the house but the right side has similar shrubs. Any suggestions? Thanks!
