Daughter's wedding on the lawn: HELP
Comments (6)1. Find the Bermuda Bible on GardenWeb or search for it. 2. Follow his advice. Basically you do the following. Water ONCE a week during the hottest heat of summer, and every other week or monthly otherwise. I grew up in SoCal and there is no place, including Palm Springs, where you need to water more than once a week. One reason you might have crabgrass is because you're watering too often. Crabgrass seed needs water frequently to germinate. By letting the soil dry out for a week the weed seeds don't get the water then need. This means you'll have to water longer each time. I water from 1 to 7 hours, once a week depending on direct sun, wind, and humidity. Mulch mow weekly at the mower's lowest setting. Fertilize every month and with the products as described in the Bermuda Bible. Avoid overseeding the rye. The problem with overseeding is the shade from the rye delays the onset of the bermuda in the spring. Very hot in LA? No it isn't. LA's high temps run in the high 60s most of the year and into the 70s in the summer. I lived 3 miles from LAX for 7 years and needed a windbreaker and sweater every single day of the year. If your temps are hot, then you don't live in LA. This is why it is necessary for SoCal folks to give the name of the town they live in. There are too many zones and even the people living there don't know what the climate differences just a few miles away. But anyway, if you follow the bible you will have a good green lawn in August. Also if you could get your daughter to rethink the August date. I got married, outdoors, in San Antonio, in August - whew!!! THAT was HOT! Comments (8)Bear in mind that this wedding is just one year away. Assuming the plants will be planted in spring of 2006, they will have to be things that transplant easily, establish quickly, will put on a reliable show over a long period and produce good cut flowers. That rules out many, many perennials, which either take a season or two to establish and/or have limited bloom periods that may peak before or after the wedding, depending on the weather. In general, annuals and tender perennials will probably be your best bets, and I would suggest hedging your bets by planting a lot of different ones, to ensure that at least a few do well. Also, post your question in the annuals forum, as they may have many more good suggestions. Turtlehead is one perennial that comes to mind that should bloom well in its first year (if planted early enough), blooms over a long period from late summer into early fall, and comes in both white and pink forms. Comments (6)For a large quantity of blooms to cut, you will probably be better off with annuals than with perennials, especially if you're growing them from seed. I grow mostly perennials and woody plants, but do have a few thoughts for you. Zinnias will grow and bloom quickly, but I find the water turns very smelly after just one day; so if you're going to arrange them the day before the wedding, that's a consideration. Cosmos also grow quickly, make good cut flowers, and should give you masses of blooms in colors ranging from white through pinks to deep red. Snapdragon is another quick grower, blooming in late spring to early summer. I hope someone will chime in with more suggestions for you. If not, perhaps try the Cottage Garden forum - there are lots of very friendly and experienced gardeners there from all over the country ... there's bound to be someone who grows annuals in your climate. Don't forget fillers (like baby's breath, gypsophila) and greens - you can choose from solid or variegated leaves, smooth or rough textures, large & bold leaves or long and narrow, even trailers like ivy, whichever best suits your arrangements and your fancy. To Imamommy: I do appreciate your sincere reply and explanation....serioulsy I do. Unfortuantley, from your position, which is understandably based upon your Life's experiences, it is, in my humble opnion: lacking. This is especially true when you state it's all about YOU. Of course it's all about me...it's my posting, my question, my struggle, my family, and most importantly of all: my feelings. No matter how one "paints the picture" the viewer or in this case the reader, will take from it whatever it is they percieve, want or need to see; or perhaps are blind to see it for what it really is. I might add that the canvas may not be large enough for the artist to paint the whole picture. As for the "choice" hind site is always 20/20, but I don't think a divorce and raising 3 (innocent) children in a broken home and carting them back and forth between parents is a good idea. I didn't have an Aunt Bee to turn to and I didnt' like the idea of putting 3 kids into day care. To my x-wife's credit she agreed to consuling and too remain commited to raising our children together rather than apart. Sadly (regretably) things didin't work out. As for my children and how they feel, I know both clinically and from first hand experience how they feel, and I even know what their pattern's of behavior are, which is why: I've given up hope to any meaningful relationship; and question why I should even bother with "tradition" like this wedding. We all know that "traditions" are a long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting. Perhaps by going to this wedding there is some hope that these time honored events will provide an opportunity for some closure. God knows it's sorely needed. Lastly, if by chance I've failed to address or satisfy a question, or simply didn't agree with one's opinion, then let us part company with the knowledge that we can agree to disagree. I"m going to go and fix a hot cup of tea and I will drink that tea in honor of all of you, but most of all to Imamommy whose brush has put some color into the tapestry of my LIFE.
