If you like to get the most uses out of one squash variety try trombocino. It's a very tasty summer squash but left on the vine until the Hubbards are ready it is a teriffic winter squash that stores well. We just bake the whole thing and cut off the seed end before eating. Tom

Hi Goat Man Â

Boy, I am relieved to hear these taste good! This will be the first year for us to plant trombocino, and I was concerned about the taste thing. The main reason for planting it is because I read that cucumber beetles are not attracted to it. The buggers have devastated our crops for the last 3-4 years. Can anybody confirm this?? We have attempted dozens of control measures, but few have really succeeded. This year all of squash, melons, and cukes are being moved out of the garden proper, planted 200Â away, completely covered with Remay (at least in the beginning). I am planting a trap crop an additional 200Â away and across the road. The trap crop will be planted with varieties that the beetles prefer in hopes that they will party on the other side of the road. We have been so overwhelmed by these beetles (and squash bugs) that I am considering spraying the trap crop (Gasp!). Has anybody out there come up with a more effect strategy?? I am ready to anything.

Tromboncino (a.k.a. Zucchetta Rampicante) is most often grown for its immature fruit, which are eaten like zucchini. Since zucchini is plagued by insects & disease here, I tried it as an alternative - and it did so well that it has now permanently replaced zucchini in my garden.

The vines are long & root at the nodes where they touch the ground; this increases the yield as the season progresses. While Tromboncino is a space hog, it is also a very strong climber & can be trellised... which produces straighter squash.

Eaten immature, they are different than zucchini; not as sweet, but with a wonderful flavor... plus they are 90% seedless, with all of the seeds at the blossom end. When blanched & frozen (it freezes well) the squash turns an appealing lime green. However, when the squash were allowed to mature (they look like 3-foot long Butternuts, to which they are related) I found the cooked quality inferior to most winter squash.

Loodean, I have similar insect problems with my squash - not surprising, since I live not far from you in Wisconsin. Squash bugs, borers, & striped cucumber beetles are a serious problem, and killed much of my squash last year. I too am forced to use a floating row cover to protect the young plants, or they will be quickly destroyed.

Tromboncino will be attacked by cucumber beetles, but it seemed that only the plants already under distress were attacked. Wherever I saw a young plant with beetles, I would find a squash bug or two attacking the stem... no squash bug, no beetles. Apparently, the squash bug attack causes the plant to give off a scent that attracts the beetles. Unlike most of my other squashes, Tromboncino is resistant to the wilt transmitted by the insects; and due to its extreme vigor, usually survives the attack.

What Tromboncino _is_ resistant to is the squash borer. While I lose a few plants of C. pepo & C. maxima squashes to borers each year, I have yet to see any sign of attack on Tromboncino.

Incidentally, I was able to easily kill the squash bugs with soapy water in a spray bottle. With the addition of some sugar to the mixture, it killed the beetles as well; but it also caused some leaf burn, so it should be sprayed only on infected leaves & rinsed off as soon as the beetles are dead.

Try Gem Squash. Lots of people at our allotment site grow them. They are very popular in South Africa, and I got my seeds from someone who used to live there. They are round and dark green. When they are small, in the golf-ball to tennis ball size, you steam them whole and eat them seeds and all. They are very good tasting, with pale off-white flesh. If you let them go longer, the skin hardens and the flesh turns yellow-orange and they can be stored like winter squash. Victory Seeds has something called Tatume, from Mexico, on their site that looks just like the South African Gems that I have grown. You might try them if you can't find a source for Gem Squash. Hazel, I grow as much of our food as I can, and that means spending tons of time preserving the harvest (via canning, dehydrating, blanching/freezing and root cellar type storage) so we'll have home-grown produce year-round. I buy a mixture of organic/non-organic food from the grocery store. I'd love to buy only organic food but we have a budget to live within and it does not allow for only organic food. I do not know if non-organic foods are less healthy and will leave that debate to the food scientists. What I do know is that I'd rather eat food that was grown in the most natural way possible. For me, eating as much naturally-grown food as possible is a personal choice. I am a 16-year cancer survivor and as soon as I was diagnosed with cancer, I began eating only an organic vegan diet. The vegan part was really hard for me because I grew up in Texas and love meat, especially beef. My family wasn't crazy about a vegan diet, but put up with it (at least when they ate at home) for me. After about 6 months, I began adding meat and dairy back to our diet. We still eat healthier that we used to but not as healthy as we did during those six months. When the National Organic Standards Board was developing the standards to be used by certified organic growers, there was much debate and compromise. Some organic food advocates felt the standards were watered down and weren't completely happy with the standards as written and implemented. Some organic advocates were disappointed and felt the organic standards were too lax and were quite vocal about that. I watched the debate with interest. For me, though, I'd rather eat organically-grown food even if the standards under which it is grown are somewhat less than perfect. One reason I grow as much of our produce as I can is because that is the only way I know exactly what was or wasn't sprayed on it. If the choice is between a strawberry grown in our garden with no chemicals sprayed on it versus a conventionally-raised strawberry that may have been sprayed with various synthetic products from 1 to 3 times a week, guess which one I'd rather be eating? Just because a pesticide, herbicide or fungicide is organic in origin does not necessarily mean it is safer than a pesticide, herbicide or fungicide that is synthetic in origin. There are some organic products I've never used and never will use. I'm planting my 18th spring garden right now (my first was planted a year before we broke ground for the house), and I have used a synthetic pesticide once (last year, to save the garden from huge hordes of grasshoppers) and it almost killed me. I won't say I'll never use a synthetic pesticide again but I hope it will be another 18 years before I feel like that is the only option left to save my garden. I even use organic pesticides sparingly and, in fact, most years I don't use them at all. I use them very selectively and only for the worst of pests. Sometimes I'll spray neem oil, for example, on one specific plant that has a pest issue but won't spray the whole garden or even that whole row. I'd rather hand-pick and use other methods to remove the pests. I never spray Spinosad because it is a broad-spectrum pesticide that can harm some beneficial insects, but I'll use it in a granular product (Slug-Go Plus) that I sprinkle on the ground to kill pill bugs and sow bugs. I also use a granular organic fire any product that contains Spinosad. Other than neem and Spinosad, I sometimes use a product containing Bt 'kurstaki' on brassicas and that's about it. I mostly rely on our population of beneficial insects to help keep the pest levels low, and on hand-picking bugs or using floating row covers to exclude them from crops. I think that produce grown in the most natural way possible tastes better, and we all know that produce fresh from the garden is the best-tasting, healthiest food around. I like being able to harvest in the morning and then use some or all of that harvest in the meals we eat that day. And, on the list of what really matters, the use of synthetic pesticides bothers me the most. I have less of an issue with synthetic fungicides or fertilizers. I think every gardener has the right to grow their plants, whether ornamental or edible, in whatever manner they choose. I just choose to grow mine as naturally as I can. When I first transitioned from conventional gardening to organic gardening in the 1990s, I essentially kept gardening exactly as I always had with the only change being that I was substituting products that were organic in origin for those that were synthetic in origin. After moving here, I began to take steps to go beyond that and that was the beginning of my progression to go sort of beyond merely growing organicallyand focus more on gardening in the most natural and sustainable way. Whether you will be pleased with the winter squash/pumpkins you chose as fall decorations depends on whether you think all autumn pumpkin displays must include big orange pumpkins. I love all the C. moschatas for fall decorations because I like their various shades from buff-colored Seminole to the almost brownish-buff color of Musquee de Provence. For 7 or 8 years before the squash vine borers found us here, I always grew huge numbers of winter squash and pumpkins in all colors---including orange, yellow, white, buff, green and some that were speckled, splotched, striped or warted. It was fun while it lasted and they made great autumn displays, but the SVBs have made it impossible for me to have that wide variety of colors now, so I am content with the colors of the C. moschata group, which mostly are in a range of buff-colored shades. Having become used to what I have now in terms of sizes and colors, I am content with pumpkins that aren't traditional jack-o-lantern types. Dave, When we bought this 120 year old house 15 years ago we could see this was a much loved garden when it was started but the last owner COMPLETELY neglected it and it was entirely run over by weeds including maples, mulberry trees, ailanthanus growing out of anywhere. Wisteria and honeysuckle and raspberries and blackberries and some other nefarious vines grew on top of everything. The weeds were waist high everywhere. And one of our neighbors neglects his yard too so we have a constant feeding of weed seeds. In addition the house is built on a steeply inclined rock. Very beautiful to look at but almost impossible to bring in or use typical garden equipment. Almost everything has to be done manually. We spent years meticulously removing weeds and saving what we could. It was coming back including what new we put in. The soil is absolutely perfect. But I got bed ridden sick for the past five years. Gardening and the yard was the last thing on my family's mind. Because we had cleared the surfaces and made the garden even healthier the weeds seem to be have gotten an even better hold. (I thank God some of my roses and other perennials and trees are still alive and have even grown.) Last year my husband and one of my children tried to weed a patch of a land, mulch and grow some vegs. Yes they got some fun and some vegs. But I saw then come in red faced and exhausted after fighting the weeds but it wasn't going anywhere. The weeds seem to eat them up. This year, spring, I and my husband hand weeded the area where we wanted to plant and tilled the land. (Its a terraced area). There are so many weed seeds everywhere. And its a season for a new set of weeds every 2-3 weeks. And there are perennial weeds with some tough tenacious roots left behind. So no matter how much we weed within a couple of weeks weeds come back. There is just too much of them. The area where we put down fabric was weeded and tilled. The area where we are growing the vining squash was also weeded and tilled but I can see new weeds coming up. One season of suppression and removal is not enough. I just wanted to go ahead and garden this year. I have missed out on a lot of life. All that babble was to tell you I am conscientious about garden practices and I did weed and clean up. I am not just trying to cover up a problem. I am trying some kind of containment for a while. I will let the squash do its thing. I won't get into the damage it does to the soil Dear Dave! Hi K... yeah, they do produce a few less fruits than what you might expect from zukes. I've still gotten a decent harvest from mine though. I think I planted like 14 plants, and I've gotten like 20-30 or so fruits. One vine doesn't count because after letting the first zuke go to seed, it really hasn't had any female flowers. I still have that one on the vine, but If I picked it, it might offer more flowers. The plants are still fruiting, but the main stems have slacked off. Now I'm pollinating flowers on the secondary branches. I've let these get a bit larger than I would have for other varieties, and the flavor and texture has been very good. I've eaten them a few different ways, but the easiest for me is grilling 10" x 3/8" or so slabs and they are delicious! I coat with olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder, leave the cover down on the grill, and they simultaneously steam, and grill, with a juice that is incredible. As you know, they also seem to have more male flowers than other varieties. I'm running out of recipes for the blossoms. One of the best so far was zesting lemons into ricotta cheese, adding a few herbs, and letting that marinate for a bit. I filled the blossoms using a bag with a corner cut out, and coated them with a simple flour, baking soda, water, and lemon juice batter. Deep fried them, and wow! Slightly messy for me to make lol, but definitely worth it! I found it easiest to cut out the stamens right after harvesting before the flowers have a chance to close up a little as they do by afternoon. I should stop now... I'll make myself hungry!

We're fortunate that cuke beetle isn't a problem here. Our cured long trombocinos taste good (at least to us) especially if baked with the seed end left attached. That can be an interesting task with the long ones. Tom

Skagit, it's possible that the tromboncinos I tasted (I grew them under the variety name "Zucchetta Rampicante") were not fully ripened, even though they had colored up. Although I was able to save good seed (I cured them indoors for 6 weeks), they are a real stretch for my climate... as are most squashes grown here for seed.

I know that even a slight degree of immaturity can make an immense difference in the taste of winter squash, resulting in a watery texture & bland flavor... which was what I experienced. Since there are many squashes (most notably many of the pumpkins) that taste similarly even when fully ripe, it's hard to be sure. I have eaten many butternut varieties (including the "Tahitian", which looks like a fatter, slightly shorter cousin of "Tromboncino") and found them all pleasant; so I suppose I will have to give "Tromboncino" a second chance.

I wasn't too crazy about the taste (a bit too bland), but I may have picked them after they were too large? I have a smallish garden and love other varieties more, like Costata Romonesca.

Those plants do get big, though, I had mine growing up a trellis that was easily 10 ft tall.

I've had some success using Surround against the vine borers. I think it really does act as a barrier that they cannot penetrate, but you have to keep it up.

We love an grow many winter and summer squashes, chosen for reported good flavor. We found the tromboncinos to be fairly tasteless compared to all other we grew. I tried them both very young and with some more maturity - hoping they might get tastier. I did let some grow to their fullest, and cured them like gourds - tho thin-walled, they are neat!
They had beautiful white flowers, but we won't grow them again.

Gladgrowing, if your squash was white-flowered, it was not Tromboncino, which has very large yellow flowers. I suspect by your description that what you grew was Cucuzzi, which is a white-flowered edible gourd (hence, you could cure it like a gourd). ;-) That would also explain the lack of flavor. The two vines are similar in habit, and their long fruits could easily be confused by someone unfamiliar with them.

I've been growing tromboncino for a couple of years and everyone loves it. We eat it only when it is very young and immature, and at that stage it is a lime green color through and through. Stays that color after cooking as well, which is very pretty on the plate. It has a buttery taste that everyone I know agrees can't be beat, and that flavor also has come through very well in pickles and baked goods. Last summer a couple of my squashes did accidentally get rather larger and turn a golden yellow color, so I saved one for seed but didn't know it could still be eaten at that size. I'll file that information away for future reference.

No problems with squash vine borers, yet. But last year for the first time we did have quite an infestation of cucumber beetles in our community garden, which attacked the tromboncino leaves but didn't seem to really affect the harvest. This year I have moved to a different garden location so it remains to be seen whether the beetles will follow.

I trellis my tromboncino vines and they will grow to monstrous size that way. Of course my soil is also well manured, but the leaves are easily a foot in diameter and one vines can spread 30 feet in several directions. The leaves are a beautiful marbled color, very attractive.

How tall was the trellis? I'm growing tromboncino for the first time this year. I have them in a 10' row with maybe 8 plants (probably too many).

My trellis is a 10' long cattle panel that reaches about 6' off of the ground supported by a pair of large steel T-posts.

That trellis is approximately eight feet long and eight feet high. It is two sections of saplings made into "ladders" and leaned against each other. I have about six to eight plants in there. So, it sounds like you will be pretty set. You might want to get a bit more height. They love to climb.

And, FYI, the pickled tromboncino taste fantastic!

I am going to be making some gratin aux patissons (heirloom French squash) tonight based on my mother-in-law's recipe (she is French) and i will post the recipe on our blog probably by the end of the evening or tomorrow at the latest.

This was always one Ive wanted to grow, so I put my order in today from Pinetree Seeds...Will a July planting make?
Or should I just hold on till next spring?

I think that you will be fine with the late planting. That is, as long as you get some rain down yonder in Mississippi. We planted from seed in April and it only took about two months to harvest.

It worked out really well. And, in fact, one of the jars didn't seal so I just decided to refrigerate it and ended up trying a few of them. They are delicious! You can use whatever spices that you want.

Thanks kevin...I really love the idea of pickling ...I really believe in the pro-biotics and believe that anything pickled is very good for you so I am anxious to try this...I pickled some of my radishes...now I will tell you that they are fabulous...but they smell highly...doesn't bother us or evidently most people because I made a dip using them and the aroma was wild but people ate it like crazy...and this was at a "wine sharing" and some pretty snooty people were there but they cleaned out my stinky dip..

I went out and checked my vines this morning and I have one small squash...I was really late getting my garden going this year...thanks so much ...

I grow tromboncino every year, straight upwards on a trellis and the fruits hang down nice and clean. It is not bothered by much and I have never seen any SVB evidence on these vines. I pick them when they're about a foot long and use like any zucchini. Tromboncino has a permanent place in my garden - I just love it, and I also grow cucuzzi which is an even more vigorous vine. Both are great on the grill with a little marinade.

I'll put in my vote for Tromboncino too. This is the first year with it, after previous years growing zucchini and yellow crookneck. Both succumbed to Squash vine borers and squash bugs. The only zuccini that tastes good to me are the heirloom Italian varieties, not the bland good-looking varieties most people plant, but they are absolute insect pest magnets. Crookneck survived for quite a bit longer and tasted good, but still ended up being destroyed by borers. I have trellised Tromboncino. It grows vigorously; the young squash taste good; and it has (so far) had no insect problems, while a cucumber right next to it has been devasted by cucumber beetles. I plan to make this my standard squash variety from now on.

Here's a photo link of one of my trombocino. This is the first time I've grown this and I'm having a blast. I haven't eaten one yet, but I gave away 2 young ones to my neighbors who said they really liked the taste. I'm letting this big guy go just to see how large it will get. It's over 5 ft long at this point. The vine is a good 25 feet long on one shoot.
