How do you get rid of a sticky?

I find them rather irritating! You can't respond to them to get them to go away. They are on several forums. How long til it goes away> Nancy

A "sticky" thread is one that is placed permanently at the top of a forum / category. Even if no one posts in it, it will still show up on the first page. This is often done for special announcements, rules / guidelines, and FAQs.

When a Forum Thread is made 'Sticky' is stays at the top of that Forum 'category' and this is normally done by Forum Moderators.

rhizo: We are talking about 5 years ago when I was desperately trying to get rid of them. From what I remember I used numerous different products, more organic products than anything, but also chemicals that were not organic. I remember I even used a a spray that is suppose to be powerful enough to kill hornets (don't remember the name now). But nothing worked-killed on contact but they still kept coming day after day. I tried to only use the chemicals on the sunflowers rather than my vegetables because I was afraid I would poison us if I did. I had over $400 worth of Garden Alive organic products that I tried, Bulls-Eye I remember, and other insect killing products that I had gotten from Garden Alive--just can't remember all their names now-would recognize the names if I saw them. I also tried DE I remember. Sorry I can't remember everything--it was so long ago. As far as ants go, we can control local ants very well, it is the fire ants that keep giving us fits. My husband has spent lots of money on products that say it is for fire ants, but nothing seems to work. I have read up on everything I could about fire ants, things like you should put the poison granular on the mounds in the early AM because this is when the queen comes to the top--because it is cooler then--that she will go deep in the mound when it gets hot. My husband even pours boiling water on the mounds, but all that does is just make the fire ants that is left make another mound somewhere else. All the surrounding farms around here have fire ants, so even if you could get rid of the ones you have, you are just going to get your neighbors too. Everyone in the neighborhood has to get rid of their fire ants or they just keep migrating to each others farms. We even do things like run over the mounds with our cars every time we see one when we come home or leave the house, and my husband runs over them with the tractor whenever he cuts the grass. They even got into my gardening shed and ate a hole through the large sack of my potting soil and then proceeded to make a mound out of the potting soil! If you know of something that works, please let me know because we are about to have to sell our land just to get away from the fire ants! Thanks, Sheila

I'm sorry, I have not had a chance to get any charcoal. The smell is still there. Not as strong as it was a few weeks ago and after a month it is tolerable, but everyone who comes into my new room asks "what is that smell?" This is INSANE how much worse the smell is after this supposed VOC compliant crap. There is no way in hell this is better for you. for the first 3 weeks I could not even stand being in the room as I would get a headache after breathing this in for 20 minutes. I loved the old smell of the old stuff and it would be gone within a week. This smell is going on over a month and It is still lingering. I think we need to find another brand or get everyone to complain to these varnish companies to bring back the old formulas. Why did they even change it? How in the heck did they ever test this and Say "Yeah this is better!! You would have to have absolutely no sense of smell to think this stuff is good for anyone to breath or use. Do they really think by changing the smell or recipe of varnish we are saving the planet? It is ridiculous!! I'm so sorry I wish I had the answer for you. I just left my windows open a crack for days until it was tolerable. Also you could use a damp rid bag and hope that will absorb some of the smell. It is strong at first but I know at least these hanging bags smell better than the varnish!! You can get these at Lowes or HomeDepot in the cleaning isle.

Yes-be super careful. My husband helped his buddy go pick up free granite from Craig’s list. . Even with 3 huge guys, my husbands bicep partially tore. And he is really strong and works out hours a day. Editing to add that I would not let perfect strangers come in your house and risk an injury without a signed waiver. If they drop it, damaging themselves or your home, it could be a pain to deal with it. Even if they are picking up from your driveway, have them sign the receipt that excerpts you from injury or damage.

Use google chrome with ad block and you will see no ads or popups.

Firefox with the adblock plus add-on for me.

Nancy: exactly what zeb said about stickies. The moderators usually put them there because they find the info within the sticky is of importance. !st time I've seen GW use them.

I have ad blocker but it doesn't deal with stickies. I am beginning to get annoyed by the current one. I can see the point of putting it up for a short while but I think everyone will have read it by now and it's getting counter productive. Maybe GW will realise this and remove it at some point.

It doesn't bother me, I just look at all the thread titles and when they've been posted to anyway. A note about ad-blocker. I'm all for it, but you might wish to add free sites that you frequent to your "white list". If they can't cover their costs with their income from the ads then bye-bye "free" part of free site. It just came up on another site I like very recently.

sunnibel - I do not object to the ads which come up in a side bar and they still appear. I can look at them or not as I wish. What I hate its the ones which are embedded in the text and start playing loud music, stupid sound effects or inane videos when the mouse passes over certain words. They are totally counter productive imo since they are completely untargeted and advertise products based solely on a keyword. They irritate me sufficiently to guarantee that I'll never buy those products. Adblocker is currently stopping 5 of them. GW has an opt out option but you need to do it every time you log on.

Flora, maybe there is something intrinsic in my ipad that I don't know about, but I've never had an experience like what you describe on gardenweb. Anyway, don't get me wrong, I don't really like ads but see them as a sometimes necessary evil. :)

That's interesting that you don't get them on your iPad sunnibel. If you look at the bottom of this screen you will see 'Learn more about in-text links on this page here'.
What you see is certain words within posts in a different colour and if you are unfortunate enough to hover your cursor near them an ad fills the middle of the screen making it impossible to continue reading the post until you click the x to close it. Even then often clicking the x makes it continue and you have to click again elsewhere to really get rid of it. For example a post about garden 'clean' up will cause an ad about a floor polish to fill your screen. They have annoyed plenty of other people.

One thing annoys me about this 'sticky':

1. That it is on every page of each forum, not just page one.

Actually two things annoy me about this 'sticky':

2. That it is essentially an advertisement, not relevant to the topic of each forum and certainly not an attempt to preserve some of the valuable information or sage wisdom that drops off beyond 'page 67' every day, or even to be helpful to newcomers.
