Hostaholic2, I put Black Magic in my south facing patio doorway. It can get very hot there and the winter sun can burn plants. I found that putting my large cacti pots in the front row right next to the door worked best, with the other things behind them. Saved me having to climb over things to get to the verticals and pull them partially shut on really sunny days! As for the water, I could never make up my mind. Black Magic can take a lot of water, even indoors in the winter. I based the amount I gave it on whether it was putting out a lot of leaves or not. BTW, I did find that my Alocasia Polly really just liked to go dormant. So I keep it over winter in the corner of the kitchen with Clivia miniata and don't water it at all until early spring.

Agree that they will grow in any exposure, but if you want the really big leaves, mostly shade is best, IME (a few miles north of AL/FL border.) I moved this bulb this spring from a much more sunny location where it had been for a few years and it's making leaves about 10x bigger than before. (The babies bulbs that were with it were also put in more shady locations and are all much bigger than the mama ever was in too much sun.) I also have a mini-compost pile at the base of it, and put mostly greens there, like watermelon rinds and other kitchen scraps that "melt" quickly in the heat. Next to it is a 5-gallon bucket with a slit in the bottom. I fill up the bucket and it takes a couple hours to drip out, which I try to do just before the sun hits it, so it has ample moisture during that time, about 90 minutes of direct sun. Otherwise, the leaves fall over. After they do that, they might or might not stand back up so I put a tomato cage around it. The newest leaf on this plant is about 6 ft. tall and about 3 ft. long, which is about 8" longer than the last leaf. Constantly losing a leaf is common but happens more slowly if there is ample moisture and plenty of organic matter in the soil. I usually leave the dying leaf connected but bend it back to rot near the bulb. Unfortunately, I don't usually have rain water for it, but start by dumping the water from the bucket our dog uses for his water bowl (which came from the hose the day before,) then fill the rest with the hose. With splashing and the dripping that happens before the bucket is full, I estimate it, and the other plants sharing the root space, are using about 6 gallons of water per day, some of which is probably taken by a large oak tree nearby. Just an ordinary Colocasia esculenta I got from Lowe's about 10 years ago. The leaf that is leaning out didn't seem like it would bend into the tomato cage without breaking and since it was the oldest (going to yellow and die soon,) I didn't make any effort to cage that one:

They do love moisture (and nitrogen), but assuming you have clay soil and are getting regular rain right now, that will suffice. Just don't let the soil dry out. They are tough and easy to grow, so easy they can be invasive.

I planted 2 Black Magic E. Ears 3 years ago. This first year they got about 6 feet tall, and had runners coming all out onto the path,that they were bordering. I mulched them with about 4 inches of Oak Leaves and Pine needles, which had been ground up very fine. Last year I was surprised to see 2 little babys coming up near foundation of house. I trasplanted them and they got about 5 feet tall. Last Winter we had a hard freeze leaving 4 inches of ice for about a week. I knew that the E.Ears wouldn't survive that. I purchased a new Black Magic this Spring. It just sat there until the weather started getting really warm. About the time it started growing, and putting out new leaves, last years batch started growing as well. So that is 3 years the original has survived Winter. They are about 4 feet tall now, and will be fertilized this week. I imagine that by Fall they will agin be 5 or 6 feet tall. They look really Fabulous paired with Little Blackie Sweet Potato Vine, and Pink Futurity Cannas( Dark foliage)
