Quiz and fun - what are those on the surface of the lake

This is a picture taken in Lijiang, Yunnan, China in the 50s. The lake is called the Black Dragon Lake. The mountain is Yulongxueshan or Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The picture was taken in the spring. The area is of zone 8-9.

Now, what are those on the surface of the water? I have always thought those are spring blossoms fallen on to the lake.

Hey Lisa...much thanks for taking the time and effort into checking that out for me. I do appreciate it. It looks like I will be waiting for Pineisland to get theirs ready. Erik from PI said for me to check back mid May. I've got the hole already dug for it...like I did for the lychee and mango after that. Nearly lost the mango. I had it in too big a container. When I tried to get it out, there wasn't enough root structure to hold onto the soil. I really expected this plant to have a much better root structure. Very whimpy. Just a few runners extended further down than the small root ball. Ended up snapping some of them. The next day the plant was stressed terribly. Really didn't expect it to recover. It's looking better now. Could have been a costly lesson. Wish now I didn't dig such a huge hole for it!!

I tested out at "Nantucket" but that really isn't quite right either - I like a "warmer" room than what was represented by Nantucket. I think I like very traditional but in very simple lines. A few really nice antiques which were handed down, a touch of asian influence, but mostly simple, classic stuff.

Yeah, I figured this out about French Eclectic. Well, I like French and eclectic but not sure about the combination. I agree. Sadly, the sort of rain we had in May was just too much at once and a lot of it ran off. My ground actually started cracking about a week ago. I knew it would happen, but was hoping it wouldn't happen so very quickly. The good thing about heavy rain that runs off is that it fills up ponds, rivers, creeks and lakes. The bad thing thing, at least from a gardener's point of view, is that it runs off so much of the time instead of soaking in. So, while it was drought-busting rain, I wonder how quickly drought returns if the good rain that we get is scattered or spotty and misses lots of areas. It hit 100 degrees here at our house yesterday, though I think it only made it to 96 at our Mesonet station. At 100 degrees, I generally have to water the plants in containers daily, and sometimes twice a day if there is wind along with the heat. I've tried to only water the younger plants in the ground that were transplanted after the rain ended and have been letting the older, larger plants survive on whatever soil moisture remains (which is less and less daily). I hope to get away with that until the next rainfall arrives. At this time of the year, my garden activity switches to harvest-and-survival mode where I run outdoors around sunrise, do the harvesting, water the container plants, and try to make it back inside before it gets too insanely hot out there. Then I spend the rest of the day working on cooking the day's harvest for lunch and dinner and then processing, via canning, freezing or dehydrating, the rest of the day's harvest. After dinner, I run out to the garden again and water the containers if they need it, or any young plants that have dry soil. What's missing from all that? Enjoying being out in the garden for hours at a stretch. It is hard to relax and enjoy it when it gets so hot.

so wouldnt it be an annual of some kind???

and water lily ... is not an annual ... and they call it something else .... a more exotic name .... ahhhh .. lotus ...

got me stumped.. if they used the right forum

It doesn't look like an annual, nor is it any of the above suggestions. I'll take a punt on a Sagittaria, maybe S japonica, although I'm not seeing the right leaves.

The Americans know a relative the duck-lettuce Ottelia alismoides: here.

Quote: Ottelia alismoides was first found in Florida in 2003. The duck-lettuce was growing in Thompsons Bayou, a small, slow-flowing tributary of the Escambia River. The infestation contained several plants along the shoreline adjacent to the University of West Florida campus and appeared to be intentionally planted. A systematic survey conducted later in the year found less than one patchy acre of duck-lettuce in the tributary. Biologists removed as many specimens as possible, but complete eradication may be impossible. The tributary is home to a diversity of native plant species, including Echinodorus cordifolia, Orontium aquaticum, and Potamogeton pulcher, and widespread eradication of Ottelia alismoides may cause more harm to the preserve. Due to the increased salinity of the river a few miles downstream, Ottelia will have a hard time spreading. The USDA and DEP are continuing to monitor the growth of duck-lettuce to determine whether or not it will become an invasive species in Florida.

The plants in the picture, however, are of an endangered species - Ottelia acuminata (Gagnepain) Dandy, J. Bot. 72: 137. 1934, link here

This species is intolerant of slight water pollution, climate and environmental changes. They vanished for a couple years. Eventually a small population was located in a high altitude small pond. The plant is a symbol of pristine water quality.

Here is a spring without O acuminata in the Black Dragon Lake.

They are actually very fragile. One bottle of detergent will destroy them within a week, while other plants love the fertilizer :)

The US might try the chemical method to control ducklettuce O alismoides if there is a real need. In general, these are not the fast spreading kind and they need warm, soft, shallow and crystal clear water.
