I have been growing Angels Trumpet flowers in my yard in large garden boxes for years and I collect the pods as they fall, however, in the fall I just pinch off the pods wrap them up in a paper towel and store them in a paper bag over the winter. In the spring I just sprinkle the seeds around in the planter, feed and water regularly and them and let them go from there! I find that they're one of the easiest, hardiest seeds to plant! I've also had pods that didn't open up by spring so I just used a knife and sliced the pod in half to retrieve the seeds. The seeds are extremely toxic, they contain extremely potent hallucinogenic toxins so handle with care, wash hands after handling pods/seeds and keep away from kids & pets. Happy planting!

Datura self-pollinates, even before the bloom opens, so you should get an identical plant, though exceptions have been recorded. Brugmansia, on the other hand, often produces plants with traits differing from the parent plant when propagated from seed. In sum, the probability that your Datura will produce seeds of identical plants is pretty good, but there's a slight margin that the new plant will be different. The only demonstrable way of showing the outcome of your seeds, of course, is by planting them.

LOL, I laugh cause I plan to do this when my neighbors seeds are ready. She has blue wild indigo and I so love that plant in or out of bloom. Also she has so many different daylillies if I figured they would be true I would hit her for those also. I started my process last week on the edge of asking. I got a wonderful set of seeds in a sase and I took her some of the seeds of this flower she was tickled pink. I was just tickled I had something she didnt have already, her gardens are wonderful she is my inspiration. I will catch her outside one day and I will say Mrs. Peggy (thats her first name) I absolutely loveeeee your blue wild indigo,(knowing her she probaly dont even know the name of it) would there be a chance that I could take some of the seeds so I may take a shot in growing my own. Knowing this little angel she will say well sure hun, but if you come back in spring I will just get you a clump. I love this woman I swear!! I will still get a few seeds and I always tell her I am coming back in spring but I never do. Its a shame all neighbors arent as great as Mrs. Peggy!! P.S The malva zebrina, Poppy Papaver laciniata, and the Pink hollyhock I have were started from seed from Mrs. Peggy's garden I think 2 or 3 years back.

I really enjoy collecting seeds, even if I sometimes don't know what to do with them! I think I am a little bit like King Midas and they are my "gold." But I sometimes have trouble figuring out how to do it. for one thing, I never know when to harvest the seeds. sometimes I'm too early, and the seeds aren't ripe. Sometimes I'm too late, and they are all gone. Last year, I was hardly able to get any seeds from my Yvonne's salvia. They seemed to drop the instant they were ripe. I would either find bracts with white seeds, or empty ones. Right now, I am looking at Joe Pye weed and Liatris spicata that have finished blooming. The flowers are either completely or partially brown. I brought in a few and as soon as they dried their little "umbrellas" opened and the seeds turned black. Am I safe in assuming that these guys are good to go? can I bring in more flower heads? earlier in the season I had a devil of a time trying to gather seeds from Geranium maculatum. I wasn't even sure which part of their complicated structure was the seed! they are on a spring mechanism and they go "sproing" and it is easy as pie to miss them before they drop. With considerable effort I managed to get about a half dozen seeds. I hope I can germinate them! Liz
