What are the flower-like buds on my Caladium?

I'm growing a Caladium (Illustris) in a container outside. I got it this spring, and it seems happy in it's spot (yes, I know, I need to think about overwintering soon). A few weeks ago, though, it began producing what look like flower buds, with yellowish cones that wither after a few days. Is this supposed to happen? Should I remove these? Can I? The stems are so thick that I wonder if it will make the plant look/feel worse, but the dried husks of these spent "flowers" are not too attractive. I can't find anything on the Web or in the forums about this issue, so any advice would be appreciated.
