Container growing in Mexico

I am in Puerto Vallarta Mexico and want to get gardening in containers. I am up on the container but the soils stump me. I cannot get any of the brand name bags so need to make my own mix. Looking at the pix of the various 'gritty' mixes none seem to have any nutrients all are simply media to hold the plant up and drain quickly. I appreciate the need for both! So how to make a mix from scratch and what to feed. Again no commercial items readily or regularly available.

That is what you want in a grow medium for pots. Then you give them fertizer. I would keep it in-organic in pots to make it easy on yourself. If you can make the 5-1-1 go with that. If you can not get pine fines get a bale of peat moss and some perlite and lime. Mix up and add 2 tbl sp of lime per gal of mix. This will be a basic and cheap grow medium. Then feed with water soluble fertilizer. The 5-1-1 is better draining.

Wow thanks. I grow veggies, flowers, orchids and bonsai in the coast of BC but things are pretty different here.

I have gone through many postings to see what 5-1-1 is. I know it is proportions by volume but of what?

Hi, After I built mine using essentialy 100% maple leaves for the bottom part, I did a bit more reading. It seems like many of the advantages of this method is due to the active composting below the soil level that scares off pests and such. Aparently maple leaves (and most other yellow/brown leaves) have a fairly high carbon to nitrogen ratio, and thus extra nitrogen is needed for the composting to get going/continue. Of course the use of urine (which is actually quite widely discussed on the gardenweb composting forum) results in a lot of nitrogen being available for composting and probably plays a big part in the success of the method. So, whether you use urine or some other source of nitrogen, it seems like you'll need more nitrogen that what you would expect based purely and the plant requirements since the composting process is eating nitrogen. OH, by the way, I'd suggest filling the container to the top with leaves, compressing them a bit and then adding some more, otherwise the soil that you put on top starts getting lower and lower :)

ohh nice. I would go to the local gardens/park areas and garden centers, see whats available/popular/that grows well there and that you like. Then go from there. Its east to say id like this and that and it should grow well there but if you cant get it then... Lucky you! very jealous. I saw a amazing show on gardens in Mexico City omg. amazing.

My first thought is that large ceramic vessels are widely available in Mexico at reasonable prices. They could be used to make a very attractive container garden. My second thought is that, without freezing temperatures, earthenware can be kept outside year 'round. Here the freeze-thaw cycle soon destroys earthenware which is left outside during winter. The roof may be too hot for gardening. Jim

Growing roses in New Mexico

Cecil, Here in Wyoming there is about every kind of creature that wants to eat roses. I buy rolls of hardware cloth three feet high with either 1/8 or 1/4 inch mesh and cut it in a length that will wrap around the rose with room for a year or two growth, and use a t-posts to keep it in place. I cover the top with chicken wire so the deer can't stick their heads in there. Unsightly maybe and about as much work as planting the rose to begin with but so far it has worked. A drip system for water and mulch are good things to have in the dry areas because a lot of people don't soak the ground enough to get them started. The hole they are planted in also needs to be prepared so the water will soak in and the roots have loosened dirt to grow in. A taller fence may be needed for the deer, as deer can really jump if they want to. I try to get vigorous roses in the hopes that some day when they are established they will be able to withstand some grazing by the natives and I won't need the hardware cloth. Different state but I hope this helps.

5 parts Pine fines 1 part peat 1 part perlite. I found using no peat is best and using more perlite.

Hmm,
Pine fines? Are they a commercially available product, if so not available here.
Can you suggest a substitute? The pix I have seen of mix seems to be primarily composed of large grain sand/gravel?

Can you find peatmoss? Why not just use peat based mix? You might find it to be best in your climate.

Hi,
from Nov to May it is bone dry but from Aug to dec it rains 2 inches a day. Wooooosh!

I think I need way more drainage potential than a peat based mix. Also bogland is so threatened by development and peat miners. Maybe coconut fiber, coarse sand and some sandy loam? I assume I can get coconut fiber as there are trees everywhere.

Hi Bryan,
I actually took my honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta! We stayed at the Grand Velas. Absolutely unreal! While we were there we made a trip up to the Vallarta Botanical Gardens. They may be a very good starting point to find locally available resources. There website is:

For the 5-1-1 you are going to want to try to find pine or fir bark to start with, you can use the dust (less than 1/16") from that as your peat fraction if you wish. For the other part you will need to locate some perlite. You will also need dolomitic lime and of course some fertilizer. If those products are not locally available, the internet is your best bet. You should also really read Al's threads in thier entirity.
