your 'must plant' varieties for 2011

Seed catalogs are coming in the mail. It has me thinking about what I will be planting this year. With such limited space I need to really be sure that I plant a lot of tried and true plants and limit my experimentation. I thought it would be fun to see what your 'MUST PLANT' varieties are. Specific varieties of veggies that you've grown in the past, that you can really depend on every year, and wouldn't be without.

Here's my list of MUST PLANT varieties here in zone 6b- Pennsylvania:

Tomatoes: Sun Gold, Celebrity, Jet Star, Kelloggs Breakfast

Cukes: Salad Bush

Radishes: Cherry Belle

Peppers: Fat n' Sassy bell peppers

Garlic: Music, German Extra Hardy

I will dig up this thread from the dead to post my own 2011 Plum experiences... Green Gage - Turned out to be a red/purple plum with yellow flesh (Oops!)... Tart skin, meat is sweet with a decidedly Pear flavor. I will let it go through 2012 to see how it does... Does this sound like a Santa Rosa? Italian Prune Plum - Total bust! Dry, mealy, and bitter. I am giving it 1 more year... I really think it's too hot and the summer is too long here - it drops all it's leaves in Early August from the heat (not good!) and then tries to leaf back out in late September.... If it's not good this year - it's getting dug up. Anyone want an Italian Prune Plum to try out? It's still dormant... Pay shipping and it's yours! Red leaf American plum - As usual, a reliable performer for Jelly.... These are very bitter until 100% completely ripe - and then, they have a very high sugar and are very tart... I like eating them ripe, but I love them in Jelly.... From the sound of it - I really need a Damson plum and a Shiro and maybe a Satsuma! I so want to try out a European plum, but I really believe it's probably too hot and the summers are too long for them here... Thanks

All in unison... "Hi, Julie!" "The coffee is over there... by the plate of stale cookies. Welcome to our 12 step program!" ;-) Denial is not just a river in Egypt... it's the state most of us are in after about our 2nd or 3rd season of ordering and collecting Hippeastrum bulbs. It's an addiction, an obsession, and we quickly find ourselves at a disadvantage, our potted hybrid specimens vying for enough light and space, and we often resort to growing and blooming them in group sequences, forcing dormancy on a selected number while another number of bulbs comes into bloom. We might actually designate a portion of our refrigerators to bulbs only, or invest in a second unit we keep out in the garage, clearly labeled with signage of its only contents. Or, we find ourselves investing in artificial lighting, shelving units, or heated greenhouse setups. And many of us secretly wish we could pick up and move far enough south to take advantage of gardening zones, and the ability to grow our bulbs directly in the gardens! We must ask ourselves... how many Red Lions do we really need? How many Minervas or Star of Hollands can we possibly justify buying? Are we running more of a bulb rescue than a hobby growing experience? Once we begin pollination and seed collection and sprouting, we know we've crossed a threshold from which there is no return! If we branch out into the collection of any and all amaryllids, we are surely lost! And yet, there are surely other habits or addictions that are much worse, and we should count ourselves lucky we have embarked upon something of a tame, albeit rather expensive nature! When we find ourselves living in the midst of a bulb jungle, we know we are addicted... when we find ourselves torn between buying groceries and buying bulbs, we know we are addicted... and when we go out of our way for anything related to bulbs or the growing of bulbs, we know we are addicted. You'll excuse me, now... Hi Mindy and all on the New England Forum, Michelle runs a wonderful plant sale in Avon as part of the Cosco's work for the Children's Miracle Network and Children's Hospital in Boston. Any amount of money made for them is well appreciated and her huge donation is a tribute to her and her family and hard work she puts into this. Any and all help will be appreciated, whether it be seeds mailed to her to start, containers to sow seeds in, Spring divisions of perennials that you could donate, even if they need to be grown for the following years plant sale, seedlings that you started from seed or reseeds in your gardens and any and all extra pots that you no longer want. And of course, anyone that is able to volunteer some time in Avon at the plant sale would be well appreciated. Michelle can arrange for someone to come to your home to pick up anything that you are able to donate for the plant sale, so if you are not able to bring it down, don't feel that you can't help out. Marlene, so you had to be "dragged out of the Prouty Garden" and in Oct no less. You should see it in the spring and summer then. It's become one beautiful garden with plants growing, blooming for every season. I can remember when it was just a dream to have and how it slowly took shape and started to develop. Many, many perennials, trees and plants there are from my grandparent's farm, donated by them over the early years of the development of the garden, and spent many a day shoveling soil, compost, peat, mulch and planting that garden, It's a beautiful, peaceful place to sit and relax in, enjoy the beauty and bring a child to that is an inpatient. It is always full of staff, parents, children and in the summer, many an event is held outside in the garden for the children. Michelle, I suggest that instead of using the abbreviation CMN, you actually use the full name, Children's Miracle Network and Children's Hospital. These all did great in my garden last year! I am definitely replanting these varieties along with some new experiments.

Seeds I am going to order from Hirt's this week. The broccoli, rutabaga and kohlrabi I will plant now in my early spring garden along with lettuce, carrots, and parsnips. The rest is for my summer garden.

I always plant lots of paste tomatoes, Romas, San Marzanos, Opalkas. Also Principe Borghese tomatoes for drying. I tried Black Krim toamtoes, and would plant them again, tasty and sort of early. Super Sugar Snap Peas are a must have, and last year I tried Oregon Sugar Pod snow peas and will have them again. Nelson carrots, Provider beans, have been standbys. This year I am trying the purple Trionfo Violetto beans as well. Seems like I made a good choice! I grew a seed that came in my packet of "Largo" summer squash that was not Largo, but some other squash that was gray-green and quite prolific, the most prolific of any I've ever planted. I would plant it again if I could. It was a large plant with several growing heads in all directions, kind of like how a winter squash grows. Diva or Marketmore cucumbers are favorites, and Florence fennel just because it is so weird to look at and so yummy to eat. Lots of kinds of broccolis are nice, as then you have harvest at different times. Teton spinach does well for me, and some saved seeds of "Gusto" bell peppers that I guess Park Seed doesn't have any more, but that I saved from long ago. I won't be planting purple carrots again (Purple Haze). They grew well, but they color all the food you cook them with gray!

I have a lot, but some of my favorites are:

Super Sugar Snap peas (with greens, strawberries, and nuts--perfect spring salad!)
Petit Provencal peas (easy to shell, lots of peas per pod, perfect height for my short fence)
Cimarron lettuce
Anuenue lettuce
Orange Bell, Red Ruffled Pimento, Corni di Toro, Serrano, Anaheim, and Mariachi peppers (yeah, we eat a lot of peppers...)
Danko, Green Giant, Purple Russian, Black Cherry, and Ildi tomatoes (...and a lot of tomatoes)
Early White Bush Scallop squash - delicious, and branched vines, so some of them escaped the borers
Fortex beans
Chesnok Red garlic
Red Russian kale

I grow lots of other things, but these are varieties that I have consistently planted for years now, and will not go without :)

Winter squash: Until someone comes up with a miniature butternut, Waltham Butternut is the only one I'll grow.

Tomatoes: Cherokee Purple are worth the small yields and cracking.

Dried beans: Mitla Black. They take everything the brutal Alabama summers can throw at them while out producing other beans and are mostly ignored by pests.

Alabamanicole - have you tried Ponca Butternut? It is a smaller, faster maturing butternut. Fedco has it, as do a few other companies.

It's been ages since I've started tomatoes from seed, however, it's tough to look past the Orange Blossom variety from Johnny's. I'm also planning on five plantings of carrots:
Atomic Red
White Satin
Deep Purple
A yellow variety who's source escapes me right now
An arbitrary orange variety

Also looking at speciality cukes

More to name, but gotta get back to work for right now. 8.5 more weeks till seed startin' time! :-D

vikingkirken, where do you get your white scalloped squash seed? I have not seen it in my sources, but it sounds like something I would like to try.

Thanks for the idea, ekgrows. I may try it out next year. A lot of the short season varieties can't handle our summers and I prefer good keepers... but a small-fruited variety would be a real boon. Those giant 6 and 7 pound Walthams are just impossible for me to finish eating before they go bad.

High Mowing seeds sells Waltham and two varieties of smaller butternuts.

My must-plants are:

Summer Squash: Zephyr

Otherwise, I'm too new at this to have must-haves, because I've only grown one type of most everything else , or I did a bad job growing the different varieties I did plant.

donnabaskets, I have grown Wood's Prolific Bush Scallop. (It's pure white.) Tasty and *extremely* prolific, and the plant is well-behaved in the garden. If you let them get big, they get very starchy and almost gluey, so I recommend picking them small.

The flesh is very dense and holds up well to canning.

alabamanicole, have you tried Burpee's Butterbush butternut squash? I've grown it a couple of years and usually produce a good number of 2 to 3 lb squash on the short vines. Burpee, Reimer, and a few other places sell it.

cybrczch - Butterbush doesn't seem like it would be worth it in terms of productivity... it seems like most people report very small yields.

I may try the Cornell's Honey Nut Mini-Butternut. It's supposed to be a good keeper, is resistant to PM and it has very small fruit, so if it is reasonably productive it could be a winner for me.

Perhaps my Google-fu has been off every time I've searched before, but having specific names to look for has really helped me find these small varieties. Thanks everyone!

After a few years of chasing after rare varieties of veggies, I'm heading back towards some of the basics this year. I'm just starting to formulate what varieties I'm growing this year.

* denotes tried and true favorites

Tomatoes (might be the except to the back to basic thing): Azoychka*, Sarnowski's Polish Plum*, Matt's Wild Cherry*, Anna Russian, Orange Minsk, Black Cherry* , Gypsy, Vorlon, Black Krim, maybe 1 or two others to experiment

Peppers Hot: Hungarian Hot Wax*, Cayenne*, Jalapeno*, Ethiopian Brown Berbere (always a challenge!), maybe one or two others to experiment

Peppers Sweet: Melrose*, (still need 4 others. I had quite a few do well last year. So I need to check my logs from last year)

Winter Squash: Waltham Butternut*, PA Crookneck Squash*, Tromboncino*, maybe 1 or 2 others (all C. Mixta or C. Moschata this year)

Pole Beans: Cherokee Trail of Tears*, Kentucky Wonders* and a few others

Bush Beans: Blue Lake*, Burpee Stringless*, maybe a few others

Runner Beans: Painted Lady Runner, White Half Runner

Melons: Pike*, Noir de Carmes*

Broccoli: Green Goliath* and 1 other

Corn: Hickory Dent and 1 other dent corn and 1-2 sweet corns, (new to me this year)

Sunflowers: Mammoth* & maybe one other type

I also grow a few flowers (zinnias, marigolds, nasturtiums)

A few things get grown in containers too: eggplant, Swiss chard (hoping in containers the bunnies won't get it this year), tomatoes & peppers. Haven't figured out the varieties yet though.

Tomatoes -- still working on figuring out the must-haves for this climate but its not a garden without tomatoes.

Beans -- yardlongs and State half-runners

Cucumbers -- Eureka and County Fair (why aren't these varieties more popular? The production is spectacular, the flavor excellent, and the disease resistance kept them going more than two weeks past the time the neighbor's cukes had died).

Winter Squash -- Giant Argonaut Butternut since my large household would need 2-3 Walthams for a meal.

Basil

Everything else is negotiable.

I will plant 'Applause' tomatoes for the rest of my life. Even in bad years, it produces the most perfectly round, unblemished fruit you can imagine with that REAL, tangy tomato flavour (not sickeningly sweet) that bowls your taste buds over and that you can usually only find in the best heirlooms.

'Yukon Gold' is our staple potato because it tastes lovely and is the only one my husband and I can agree on (he's a red potato man and I'm for russets, we haven't gone beyond this yet).

Yellow bush beans may be deemed bland by most, but I find them so delicate and tender... even the silky feel of the bean when picking is far more enjoyable than with admittedly more flavourful green beans. When I grow them, 'Gold Mine' is my favourite. You can pick handfuls of six or eight at a time and they produce like mad.

I have favourites with most everything else, but nothing that I'd advertise to the world as 'must plant' varieties. I experiment still and would give up my other varieties in a heartbeat if I found something better. The three that I mention above... I can't imagine anything coming along that could beat them out.

booberry, could you tell me why you like PA Crookneck Squash? I believe that is the variety I grew this year. Got the seed from Baker Creek. We usually prefer butterCup or kabocha varieties for dry, sweet flesh. I may grow it again simply because I found a recipe for caramelized butternut squash that is fabulous. Otherwise, simple mashed squash seems too watery and bland. Still seems to be keeping well and was advertised as keeping about 6 mos.

I'm trying to refrain from chasing too many new things.

I really liked the Pa Crookneck Squash. I have problems with bugs (especially cucumber beetles). The Pa Crookneck squash & butternut squash seem to be able to hold up to the beetle abuse. I don't like to use pesticides on the garden, because I bring the dogs with me to the garden and let them run around (the garden is the only fenced in area we have. The Pa crookneck squash also twists and turns making them fun & quirky (like their grower :) .)

The past couple of years I've had no luck with C. Maxima (buttercup & hubbard squashes) or C. Pepos (most pumpkins & acorn squash.)

Hmmm! I haven't found butternuts or the Pa crooknecks to be watery at all. I usually cook mine in the oven with a little bit of water.

I'm doing a lot of zukes as usual (Black Beauty, Super Pik, Dark Green, and Gold Rush). Will also do tomatoes again, including Brandywine, Sungold, Super Sweet 100 (not Million), Stupice, and Juliet. Will also do cukes, in particular Suyo Long. Regarding beans, love Kentucky Wonder and Purple Podded Pole in particular. I'm also gonna put in my blackberries, raspberries, and maybe some blueberries this year (likely putting in this week). I'm also doing peas (Oregon Sugar Pod II is my fav), and I'm trying spinach, kale/mustard, purslane, and a few other veggies this year (some I've done in the past). I wouldn't say that 2010 was a failure (planted only in April and May), but the eratic weather (really hot for periods but very cool overall) did not help. Not gonna try melons or peppers where I am at any more, as I have never enjoyed any luck (not hot long enough, and eves are too cool for the peppers with a lot of effort in protecting them). Hoping to have more success this year, especially on the pole beans.

These are my tried and true, must-plant varieties for Pennsylvania, Zone 6b (probably 7). I typically will grow multiple varieties (6-20) of each vegatable, but these are the ones I always plant.

Broccoli - Nutribud (great taste) and De Cicco (side shoots)
Kale - Tuscan Black
Beans - Uncle Steve's Pole bean
Zucchini - Romanesco (distinct nutty taste)
Winter squash - African Winter Squash (SVB resistant, great taste, huge, stores forever)
Tomato - Speckled Roman and Opalka (paste), Cherokee Purple
Pepper, sweet - Marconi Red, Chervena Chushka (both cold/wet and drought tollerant, great taste)
Pepper, hot - Peach habanero, Black Hungarian, Fish
Basil - Genovese
Kohlrabi - Azure
Cucumber - Poona Kheera
